Quote: Yes while we DO have a lot of breeders. I am sure there are some breeds that are not readily available locally. but for the most part I think we have a very nice selection locally.
Chicks and eggs may not be available all the time. Some of us have waiting lists or hens we're waiting to start laying regularly after winter. It can't hurt to go to the breed threads.

Quote: It sounds like you did everything right. I don't know what happened. Maybe you should sterilize your incubator before the next hatch. Maybe you had a power surge or outage you're not aware of.

It sucks. My sympathies. We all know we shouldn't count our eggs before they hatch, but we do anyway.

This is Buckbeak. She/he was sold as Ameraucana, but I guess is an EE. I am thinking it may be a roo, but am not sure how to tell. The tail on this one is much larger than Hermione's though, that is what made me wonder.

Last, but not least, here is my little country bumpkin wearing pajamas and daddy's boots. He likes to come out and "help" me feed, which translates to telling me how to do it. He wears those boots everyday, it's a wonder he doesn't fall flat on his face. At least he remembered his coat.

You may be right about Buckbeak, the neck feathers (hackles) look a bit long and more rooster-ish. But I'm a total newbie at this so take my opinion with a grain of salt!

Love your little helper!

LFM --

That EE of yours looks to me like a pullet. BUT -- the picture is a little blury. If you'd like a more defenititive opinion, can we get a few more pictures? A good profile of the body, a top view, one that shows the leg size in relation to the body, and maybe a crisp view of the face to judge the comb.

Seems female to me tho.

Dave

Anyone have any tips on what to do if the power goes out when incubating eggs? I am only on day 4 and I dont wanna loose them but its really bad here crossing fingers it doesnt go out!

Aww... thank you for the dedication! Amazing how much they change from week to week! I think the odds are changing quickly - it's like a horse race here. Right now I'm pretty surprised at just how dark Honey is getting and looking pretty boyish in coloring. Dot looks pretty promising as a pullet at this point and Dash has me totally confused. But considering that transformation from your last photos, I'm not tossing my money away on bets. Yep, it's a horse race for sure. I don't know how they're going to come out at the next turn!

Love your writing! Jean (pips&peeps) is speculating that Dot is a pullet and Dash a roo. Honey is a wait-and-see, of course I have my fingers crossed for pullet.
Stay Tuned!
