Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I'm home almost all the time so I don't think there would be a power outage i didn't know about. I plan to mix a water/bleach mixture and spray down everything in the incubator then let it air dry. There has to be something wrong. I have only got one chick to hatch that has been in this incubator and that chick died right after hatching.
With all the money I spent on eggs for hatching I could have simply bought chicks.
I am glad i did buy some chicks though. I think i'm going to bleach the incubator then just get eggs from my mom to try a few at a time til i start getting good hatches.
After you pulled them did you open a few so you could tell when they stopped? That could tell you if your humidity is correct for lock down and if it is infectious( black gunk). You can find charts on development so you can tell when they stopped. Sorry this happened to you, don't let it stop you though. Your ideas for sterilizing and trial eggs is good.

Hi everyone,

Very sad news to share. My favorite hen, Ameracauna, who had just been laying for a week or two had a terrible situation Saturday night. I can home around 1:30 a.m. to find her roosting with the other two birds. But I saw a huge mass hanging out of her, at least 6 to 8 inches long.

Long story short we had to kill her to put her out of pain. I knew what to do for being egg bound, but nothing we did worked, or even seemed to help. We put her in warm water, we tried to manipulate the egg out, she was whimpering (who knew our birdies could whimper?!) and it was obvious that nothing we could do for her would save her.

To describe the situation in full detail here would be pretty graphic: her situation was much worse than ANYTHING I could find online or within this community. I could not bear to take a photo of it. The egg was physically outside of her body, but so were a ton of her insides. It was gruesome.

So around 3 a.m. we killed her. This is my first flock, my sweetest bird, my only blue egg layer. I was a WRECK on Sunday and am still pretty choked up about it.

I am now to the stage where I want to get a new bird, but I am pretty sure introducing one bird to an established flock doesn't go so well. I have been searching Craigslist for blue egg layers. I thought about chicks, but husband isn't interested in spending all that time.

Advice?

I am so sorry for your loss.

You did what you felt was best for your bird, whom you loved and cared for. That's the most anyone can ask of anyone.

Also, I was hesitant to even share because I really don't want to hear "oh she sould have been fine." So please, even if you think this, please don't tell me that. It would make it ten times worse and truly, what I saw was horrific and unusual and I know she would not have survived.

Sorry for your loss. Also sorry that you had to experience this. In my opinion it sounds like you did the responsible thing.

Sometimes as animal keepers we are forced to think with our head and not our heart !

Only you were there and you did what was best for your girl. It sounds like she prolapsed really bad. I'm very sorry for your loss.

I knew that I wanted to share my experience with this community, because I thought you all would understand.

I am overwhelmed by your reassurance, you have no idea how much it means to me.

Thanks for the *hug*!

I appreciate your words SO much. I knew we'd eventually be faced with possibly having to kill our birds (or let nature take its course) but I just wasn't mentally prepared yet. And the fact that it was so gruesome (I almost threw up) and at was 3 a.m. made it even harder.

I couldn't let her suffer all night like that. I am now finding peace in the notion that I found her that way for a reason, so that she wouldn't have to suffer all night long just to meet the same fate. We did right by her, ended her agony. I'm just so sad because she was my favorite.

It took me a few days (obviously) to share this with y'all, because it was so hard to write/talk about. But now I wish I would have shared sooner. This community can be so healing, thank you.

So sorry TC for you loss. My rabbit isn't proven and this is her first litter. I'm hoping for the best, but not holding my breath. Best of luck with your other litters.

I was worried about that with my first hatch, wrapped the bator in towels and blankets while I was at work, just in case. The car adapter sounds like a good idea too, or they have those battery starter thingy majiggies that have plugs and radios on em... Not sure what that would run though.

Sorry for your loss flirty.

I saw an ad on CL for some blue egg layers, she has eggs and chicks and possibly older pullets as well, I'll grab her email for you.

X2

Thank you so much. Really, truly, thank you.

I definitely feel like I started out that night thinking with my heart, and even as I became more and more emotional about how everything was going, I was thinking more and more with my head.

I really appreciate your kind words. I just kept thinking "why is this happening to me, I am such a newbie at chickens, why me?" and I felt so guilty that I have been wanting her to lay eggs so bad and when she finally did, it was what killed her
