A very simple answer / solution to this is watch / listen to the chicks. If they are all far away from the light they are too warm IF they are huddled tight under the light they are too cold. IF they are just milling about they are just right.
I am NOT saying this is the best or only way to judge the temp in yer brooder. This IS the way I do it and it works for me. Just FYI

I check to see if they are leaving pizza boxes and empty beer can on the coffee table--if so, I kow they are TOO comfortable!

Red Bridge is easy to find at any grocery store, (it's made by Anheuser Busch) , but we really like New Grist (also sorghum-rice based beer) and really, really, really REALLY love New Planet GF beer- the raspberry beer is awesome.
