The Zoning Code does not define ‘pets’. Therefore we can look to the other definitions in the City Code for guidance. The Animal Control Code defines “Pet Animal” at Section 6.08.030 (S) as:

“Pet animal” means any species of wild or domestic animal sold or retained for the purpose of being kept for pleasure, companionship or utilitarian purposes and not kept as a food source.

Therefore: If the chickens are kept for a food source, they are NOT a pet and are prohibited in the R-4 zoning district.

So yeah I'm thinking that we can still have them. I don't know exactly what they mean as keeping them for a food source, I mean I understand that chickens lay eggs, I CAN'T STOP THEM FROM DOING THAT, but yes I wanted them as pets. I love all animals like a pet and I care very deeply for them. I've always been very close to any animal I've owned and have cried with every death, or having to give them up for whatever reason :( I've wanted chickens for a long time, and I'm praying God will help me find a way to have chickens. I believe this is it :D
It is my understanding that utilitarian means you can keep them for eggs - it's a "Practical" (utilitarian) reason. Food source would mean for breeding and raising as meat chickens I should think. So, you get pleasure and eggs(utility) from chickens - all's well!

That's what I'm thinking too! Which is not the case!

Unfortunately your intentions aren't going to matter. You will need to complain and get the law changed. Similar to how you couldn't have an illegal weapon of some sort and just claim "but I'm not going to use it".

No matter how much people try to make them pets, the facts are chickens are food. The code cited in this thread for your city prevents you from raising livestock for food. It's stupid yes for multiple reasons, but you're going to have to get a group and change that ridiculous code before you'll convince the city to let you have your chickens.

Thankfully with urban farming and backyard chickens being so popular right now, city governments all over the country are changing their laws and codes. There's and entire section of the forum here devoted to the topic but I'd start with a letter writing campaign, use social media to find like minded people an support within the city and force them to change it.

RobB came by with his lonely chick and we introduced her to my chicks. They are a few days older.

Here is Lucky in with the Breda fowl. Can you find her? I tried putting one of my chicks alone with her in a separate tub but they weren't happy with that. They all needed to be together.

She found the water right away. The others showed her where the food is and they are all getting along fine. Hope your hen has a chance to recover.

Thank you Flaming Chicken for rescuing my little chick. I named it Lucky because when I got home from work that day I was going to throw the eggs out because I didn't think they were fertile. I picked up momma to put her in another pen and there was baby still all wet. she had just been born. if it had of been 15 minutes later she would have been in the garbage can. the other two eggs didn't hatch. Momma was attacked by one of my other chickens and now can't walk on her right leg. she keeps falling over. its been a week now and she isn't much better. I will give her till Friday then I think I will have to put her to rest

she tried so hard and did a good job raising the baby

Quote: Chickens are NOT food, if they aren't raised for food. They are not raising chickens for food purposes! City says they can be raised for pleasure or Utilitarian purposes (utilitarian can cover the raising of chickens to eat eggs). They can have livestock, but not to be raised for food. I think the ordnance means commercial raising of food.
