Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I really need to do some major ccken chores to catch up out there. One of my feed containers I wasn't using got left out in the rain and is filled with mold and poop. Need to bleach and scrub it out, and make a fresh batch of BOSS and oats mixed with scratch. Then we will be cleaning out the whole coop and run today all together. Then have friends coming over!

Enjoy your visit with your friends. I hope you enjoy the rest... but, ya know. How much fun can playing in poop and mold be?

Thanks!  I forwarded it to my husband.  Although - the document recommends using fertilizer on the grass - something my husband is going to love to read.  Do you guys use that around your chickens?  I'm very anti-fertilizer... maybe I'm over-the-top.  I guess I don't know enough about the chemicals that are in fertilizer.

ETA:  I garden - but I always use compost as my fertilizer.  Things usually grow well, as long as we get enough sunshine and I remember to water during dry spells.

I don't use chemicals anywhere near my garden. With dirty duck water and rabbit poop that is all the fertilizer I need. I also compost and get worm poop for added benefits. Last year I had the rabbits in a portable dog pen to mow the yard as well but right now the rabbits are in a more secure pen because they have bunnies and they want to dig burrows in the grass. Moving the rabbits in the portable pen not only kept the grass cut, it also fertilized the lawn. The rabbits do a great job loosening up the moss too but soon I will have chickens for that job. I use moss killer in the front yard because it is not fenced but one day I hope to have a fence in front so I can get the ducks, rabbits, and chickens working on the front yard too.

Quote: I went and took a look at her and I think her hip might be dislocated or sprained. I told him to keep her from moving too much and see if it gets better. But she had been broody and was weak when the other hen jumped on her so I think that is why it hurt her. Nit sure it will heal, but I think I convinced him to give her a chance.

Remember when Drama was hurt? We're pretty sure she got hurt by the other two jumping on her while she was laying around with an impacted crop. I didn't think she'd ever be able to walk again, but the chicken chair did wonders. Here's the link for the chicken chair we used with her. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...k-or-injured-chick-w-pictures/20#post_9021691

AND NEXT Saturday we need to see ya at Canby.

I have been talking myself out of having chickens for awhile but that is no longer possible now that I joined this site! I picked up 5 "Araucana" (hatchery name for them, aka Easter Egger) chicks last week and yesterday I picked up 6 "Ameraucana" (hatchery name, aka Easter Egger) chicks because they seem to resemble the "Aracauna" chickens I raised in the past. Based on the "experts" here I should have all Easter Egger chickens so I can get all colors of eggs and a flock of interesting birds to look at as well. I will be disappointed if these chicks actually meet show standards for these breeds but hopefully they are what I have raised and enjoyed in the past. I am curious to see the difference between the "Araucana" Easter Egger chickens and the "Ameraucana" Easter Eggers but as long as I have hatchery birds that lay all the colors of eggs and not just one color I will be happy with my selection.

Hopefully my neighbors will not find reason to complain if I happen to have a rooster with my pullets because I want to be able to hatch eggs too. I may have to cut back from the 11 chickens I have now since I already have 13 ducks (soon to be 10 when the trio is picked up on Saturday). The first five chicks already have names (Symphony, Melody, Cello, Viola, and Treble) but my daughter needs to name the new chicks. I only wanted three more chicks but Del's insisted I needed to get six. We will probably need to select our favorites when they start laying and then sell the extras.

I have a total of four Little Giant still air incubators (I don't believe in keeping all my eggs in one incubator, LOL) so once my Australian Spotted ducks get broody and start hatching their own eggs I will need something else to hatch. My first batch of ducklings is due the 22nd so I am getting excited for them to arrive. I will probably need a fan kit to hatch chickens, though. I am not using a fan for the ducks because I need to keep the humidity higher for them than for chickens. I have been candling eggs and they seem to be doing well so hopefully I get a good hatch rate.
