Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

A little news flash for me. I have just been contacted about cutting out some fish for a local Native American tribe. Seems they want 7 to start ant these would be on display in some special location!!

A shovel.
Even when you use moss killer you have to remove the dead moss, usually with a steel rake which will leave behind the grass that's still growing. But the moss just comes back a little slower. But it you have lots of grass and just a little moss, maybe just using the steel rake would be enough to "scratch" it out.

Hmmm.... maybe there are other "safe" substances that will kill moss but not the grass???
I have heard a mix of water & TIDE laundry detergent...kills moss on roofs & does not run off the roof & kill your landscaping...maybe spray or pour it on mossy spots ?
I have also seen folks distribute iron dust/pelleted over the lawn.... waite a few days until it has dissolved.
Good for the lawn & soil, and kills off the moss.
I think.

Is anyone expecting a hatch any time after the 26th? I'm looking for something blue, splash, or a really good layer. Try me...Lucy will need chicks around the 28th-3-4th?? ish??? LOL I'm not too picky, but I'm not going to let her be broody for more than 2.5 weeks or so, she's a stubborn one!
Jess, I can cook up a batch of BSL's if you want, but they would be 3 wks out from when you say "go"
Thanks Dave but I'd rather not wait too long...thanks for the offer though!
This one's for FirewifeJess They seem to be getting along swimmingly! Still a bit of pecking order going on at times, but there was never any blood shed, and they are roosting with the other ladies (seen in the background) nightly! They're also laying pretty consistently :) My husband LOVES the BCM eggs, he said she's his favorite now!
Yay!! They look so happy! I am very glad it all worked out, funny you posted this pic because I was just thinking about them last night and wondering if all was still well :)

So, as I said, today was an excellent day, over all. For instance, I have eleven hens and pullets, and this is eleven eggs:

(G=Ginjur, the non blue egg laying EE, T is the younger Hamburgs, R is the older Hamburgs, A is the Australorp, and W is the BLRWs. And of course the teeny one is from the Barbu d'Anvers.)

Also, this young lady's next elder sibling was born on June 6, 2012:

So good, eh?
Oh what a beautiful baby !!!!!!!!!!

Yes, they seem to be happy. I just adore the EE, she is the sweetest of all the 4 hens we have now. She is just so sweet! And I was shocked at how relatively painless the whole "re-establishing pecking order" thing was, I was expecting the worst but I think we lucked out with one of the easiest transitions ever. Granted, we pretty much let them have free reign over the whole backyard for a week (which isn't usually the case), so I think they were distracted enough to ease into it.

And I know I *should* have quarantined, buit in my opinion they would have been much less happy being confined for 30 days than they are now. And everyone seems fine for now. The BCM is cute, I think she half-heartedly wants to go broody because I have seen her sitting on the other 3 girl's eggs before, but then she didn't lay...she is docile though, and let me take the eggs. And I haven't seen her do it since.

My gals seemed to have a hard time using the nest boxes before we added to the flock, I am happy to say that your girls might have "taught them a lesson" because now they seem to be laying in the nest boxes (or just outside the nest boxes) much more frequently!

ChickieLady:

Did you mention that you already planted cucumbers? If so, did you plant them outdoors? Seeds or seedlings?

I'm anxious to get some going because I need to make pickles this year. But I really hate it when they don't grow because I planted at the wrong time. I obviously haven't mastered cucumbers yet dangit.

I did plant early hot house variety, called "Manny" which likes it a bit cooler.
They have sprouted, barely up out of the soil.
They are in the hot frame (heated with heat tape under 3" of sand, and has a dual-glazed window/lid.
There is also 6 jalapenos (6" tall) and 12 Anchos (4" tall) and 20 Red Cheese Peppers (6" tall) in that hot frame.
I grew all my tomatoes in there, and they have been moved to the green house now as they were getting too big & touching the glass (and could get sun burned that way)
Soon we get to build the arbor for the cucumbers, 2x4s UP and across & covered with fence wire so we can pick from beneath.

After the Manny cucs are planted, I'll start some other cukes that like more warm weather...so have multiple harvests.

We are out of bread n butter pickles..............so we need loads of cukes this year.

These are the proto types Einstein built 2 years ago.
he has since made a few others, using old desk drawers & other boxes.
he has mastered the hot frame now...first you find the dual glazed window, then you build the box with styrofoam on the inside for insulation.
