Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Well, did not actually get as much done today as I wanted to, but then I never do, or at least so rarely as to be about equal to never.

If I were rich and less picky I'd call Emporer's Palace and get Chinese food delivered; as it is, I suspect I really should make an omelet or something.

Only one baby pip today. It was early. My self control is amazing me. Keep fingers out.... Hope tomorrow we have more or else this is going to be one very expensive chick.

Another busy day outside, playing hard after school. We had a neighbor kid (8yo) over for a school project...I was so sad and distraught that this clearly bright boy could not read yet. He could write and knew his letters, but could only just barely read better than my new reader 4.5yo daughter. I'm heartbroken for the disgrace of an education he's receiving from his mom at home.

On a good note, Jeanine is quite hell bent on riding her 2 wheel bike without the training wheels so we took them off and she's been practicing. I think she's almost got it! William also started riding her 2 wheeler with pedals today at barely 3yo. He learned balance early from his pedal-less Strider bike we got him for his 2nd birthday, and today he just took off on his sisters bike. One proud mama today!

ChickiAudie, I haven't seen the latest pictures. I'll have to get onto a computer to look for them. I'm sorry if I gave you a cockerel. But, that is what my bator likes to spit out.

Makes me want to try incubating again... to see if I lowered the temperature if maybe I will get pullets. But then again, that would mean I would end up with chicks, and I am done with chicks for quite a while! I made sure of that, a beta fish now lives in my fish tank brooder.

Lowering/raising temp has no affect determining sex. The hen is solely responsible for that. Now temps can affect whether a chick survives or not.
ChickAudie - I just booted the kids off the computer to look up pictures of your little birds. Oh my gosh - they are so CUTE!

When I need chicks again, I have a feeling I'll be begging Travis for some more eggs.
I do not have Pig Pen any more, had to re-home him where he has a much larger flock to cover. He was rubbing my 7 girls raw. But once my SplashLR Bantam Wyandotte is mature he will make Blue chicks with more lacing. And they will be midsized birds, not LF or Bantam.
They are super cute!! The rir/orp mix is so cool, she's got a tiny bit if red in the middle of her chest feathers and her eyes are red with a black ring around the outside.
I will keep an eye on Leia, this sexing thing is tricky!

Can't thank you and Travis enough!!!
If the comb is not red by now, I would say it is a pullet. My pullet same age is still yellow/pink. My cockerel is very red.

We had Emperor's Palace take out; sat eating it on the deck.

We heard this terrible commotion in the goat house, so had to go take a look. Agatha (the older goat) had 2 babies on the ground, and one more popped out as we watched.
Three more baby goats!

She was cleaning them, and had no problem with them nursing, except they didn't manage to stand up very long. One inadvertantly tried nursing on Taffy, who was not amused. Taffy is keeping her little girl in the corner and watching so carefully. I had hoped Taffy would take one of Agatha's if she had three, so that they each would have two. Oh well.

Himself is down there now, keeping an eye on them - I'm (was) cleaning up kitchen and finishing laundry.

I tried the golf balls to get my girls to use specific boxes. Found out that all of my birds very much dislike them and know they aren't eggs. They took the plastic easter eggs better. Even those most knew weren't eggs and I'd find them kicked out regularly. The golf balls were always stuffed in a corner or kicked out. I have a bag of them here still. Last time I was at Coastal, they had some ceramic eggs so I picked up four of them. Certain birds used to shove them off, but after they have gotten a bit dirty, they all treat them like eggs. The dang silkies don't even like blue or brown eggs from the other birds even when broody. I put eggs in there and they all gather around and have a discussion. I had to give them some silkie eggs as well to convince them to set the other eggs.

*totally picture the bantys' having that lil group discussion *
the golf balls do indeed need to be dirty or else its.. "what the heck is that bright object of too much roundness??!!

Good evening chicken lovers! I'm planting my garden tomorrow. Looking for suggestions on what to plant to give my chickens treats over the summer. I've already got corn going along with sugar snaps. Any ideas?

TC so sorry to hear about your goats. :(

Hello, I am in Olympia, specifically the Steamboat Island neighborhood. I have 6 Rhode Island Reds so far, 5 hens and 1 rooster. We are going to see how this goes and hopefully get more, we made a huge run for them and hope to fill it up someday. One of these days I'm hoping to get a couple pigs, I need to find out if they can co-exist with chickens or if I have to keep them separate, that was the idea of the huge run, to have an open barn yard type setting. Have fun with your hatchlings and good luck!
Hello back at ya neighbor! I'm out near Steamboat too! I see you have a beauty on your arm is she a Griffin kid? I have two
