Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Well I'm excited! I scheduled next Thursday evening to head to Bradley Farm and pick up some chicks for Lucy! They have lots that I want, it's gonna be hard to choose!

Quote: EE's seem to be hard to sex. I got a really dark one once too, and it turned out to be a boy. I will only pick lighter ones now if I get any. Just because I am now superstitious.

I have heard of quit a few people getting boys when they pick out of the EE bin. Sorry about that.

I'm DYING for my friend to take her chicks! She's taking them tomorrow after Johnny's first baseball game! Then I will only need to make one trip from the brooder with my 2 chicks to the outside pen each day instead of 4 trips. It's all coming together with much less work for me :) and I assume the flock will be integrated easily by next week anyway since nobody is trying to attack the babies, even if they're not entirely nice.

Bikerchiky, I thinks it's a boy. The feathers just don't look feminine like other hens I've seen, the dark neck feathers and red bleeding through on the wings, and masculine face just scream roo to me.

x2. I'm not an expert, but I have had the sad misfortune of hatching and getting rid of 8 beautiful boys, so I do have a little bit of experience. I held out hope on one for way too long. It made it really difficult to sell him.

When I had chickens previously, I purposely picked 2 that looked different, hoping for different colored eggs. I ended up getting one pullet and one roo, even though they were supposedly all pullets. This time, I picked 2 that looked similar. I still am confused about Buckbeak, as she has a much bigger tail and the hackle feathers seem to be longer and pointier. She does not crow, but does puff the chest out and flap, as if she wants to crow. The comb looks the same as Hermione's though. I am to the point where I guess I will wait and see if they both lay when the time comes. I just have a few weeks left. Also

. I seem to have not had much luck with these batches. 2 of my 4 white leghorns seem to be roos. And yesterday, I noticed that my little Andalusian was chest bumping one of the leghorns, so I am starting to have doubts about that one as well. Ugh. Oh well. The only thing, is DH says that the ones I don't want to keep will be going to freezer camp. I am a little worried about how I will handle that. I have never done that and it freaks me out a little lot.

Is it warm enough for watermelon to grow here? I've never planted it. I always thought that needed a warm environment like California.
I haven't heard of anyone being successful with local watermelon.

I just got back from the garden store. Today, I am getting my veggies started in the garden. Usually spring is so crowded with activities that I never really get started. Today is that day.

Today and yesterday morning I found one piece of poop in the babies coop that had some red. Just my two 9 week old pullets in there.

If they were adults I'd say they're just shedding some of the lining from --- is it their intestines(?).

They are getting unmedicated chick starter and show no signs of illness. They are eating and drinking well, very energetic, eyes and nose look fine, no wounds.

Should I automatically assume this is cocci and treat with Corid, or should I wait and see if something develops?

Babies can shed intestinal lining too, I've had it happen and didn't treat for cocci. Never treat without a diagnosis, they shouldn't be medicated with anything unless there's something wrong. I would keep a close eye on the, for a day or so, if there's no more symptoms for worry, they're fine :)
