Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I need some clean legged, brown egged, breed ideas.

I'm down to 8 brown/pink layers and have a customer who doesn't like blue eggs, but the others really like it when I mix egg colors. One of the rocks died from heart issues last week. I have a brahma that hasn't laid me a usable egg in months. It's one of three birds since the forth girl lays a smaller egg. So we may be cullling one here shortly. I need a few replacements.
just wondering how you know your rock had heart issues?? want to mix your colors with the fewest hens ?? get sexlinks (for brown) and California whites or white leghorns (white)

And DON"T listen to what CR and VF have to say about white eggs!!!

they are jealous

they probably have several white layers and just won't admit it

I'm very pleased to report that my roo is growing some tail feathers! They're only an inch-and-a-half long, but it's a start! His cute friend who I'm temporarily calling Miss Buff (pronounced 'Boof') laid her first egg yesterday. Rather, it's her first egg since they arrived here. I'm not sure how old she is. I'm proud of both of them.

[COLOR=800080]I just read that Guinea Fowls will eat stink bugs...

[COLOR=800080]If you raise them, they could be free ranged and rid your property of bugs...ticks and all.

Now you got me googling guinea fowl! I am not certain I could convince DF to raise them. I dont know if our yard is big enough or if they would pester the neighbors. I tried to convince him that we could use a couple ducks as well lol. I had them as a child and they have a voracious appetite for slugs. He says ducks are too messy though. :(
I love Guineas, but like peafowl, they're only for people with no close neighbors.:old

Quote: you are being a snob about this.
So what you are saying is that the peeps here on this forum are stupid? Why else would we buy hatchery birds?
Why would you come to this forum just to spread hate and discontent? We were fine before you showed up with your attitude.

Meeting what one perceives as rudeness with more rudeness is just .. well .. rude :)

FYI 8ft sheets of plywood plus 50 mile an hour winds just don't go well together. We are calling it a day. Bummed.

You should have more help :)
I was not being rude. Obviously bgmatt does not play well with others, I was just pointing it out. If you feel offended, I don't know what to tell you.
Allowing someone to infer that you or friends are stupid is unacceptable to me. Let me note here VF, you do not have the moral high ground here.

HELP!!!!

Blackie has most of her comb torn off. I don't know how or when it happened. She has blood all down her beak and face. I know we need to get her washed up and put into a hospital kennel. Can we put neosporin on the wound? If not, what?

That's awful! You can use triple antibiotic ointment. No pain reliever, just the basic stuff.

Oh, yeah, tell me about it. I reallyreally need to finish the Tower of Solitude, but considering that I'm handling big pieces of greehouse tarp and the wind is gusting to 45mph from unpredictable headings, and I fought it all day yesterday, I'm going to rest a mite before I get on it.

I'm in the position right now where I still need to put forth exceptional effort so that I can have downtime before the chicks hatch: I need to put the d'Anvers pullets in an outside dwelling, move the BLRW hens in with Prince, finish the Hamburg extension (last night there was a joke on Mad Men about "when they finish the second avenue subway" which reminded me of the Hamburg Extension) and then split up the other two pens of hens. Oh, and build a shearing table, shear the sheep, and put him down in the plum thicket (BTW: plums are only toxic when the leaves are wilting. The pits are always full of cyanide but none of our plums set fruit: straight dope from a vet) in a nie little jacket to work on clearing out that mess.

Every move I make gives me fewer steps doing daily chores- until the eggs hatch, of course- fewer doors to open, fewer feeders and waterers to fill.

Just keep telling yourself that, Julia.

Australorp have a good reputation.  VelvettFog's black sex links?  Marans?

They'd have to be English Marans with the clean legs.  Personally, I love my hatchery Australorps.  They lay nice big eggs at a pretty good rate.

I'm going to be getting more Australorps when I finish my flock; Malvina is a sweety, and lays well.

I looked up Neosporin; it's a triple antibiotic, but it has to be just the most basic stuff. Sorry to sound like a broken record. Hope that helps!

Thank you. Good that you sound like a broken record!!! I just found a post that said the pain killers can kill chickens. Looks like the Neosporin we have has a pain killer in it. Looks like I'm going to the store.
