Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Long time no post. All is well here on my end, sold 50 birds in the last week and still have way too many. About the extra roosters thing, I stuck an ad on craigslist this spring for sexlink cockerels for .50 ea and had a guy call for them. When he got here, he said he'd buy any extra roosters we ever had since he just raises them for butcher. So far, he has gotten a few hundred cockerels from us, I have a few purebred culls that I don't want going to someone that might try to breed them so he'll be getting those too. It is nice to have a guy that I call when I have extras that will always take them, no worries about creeps coming here for birds any more

Besides Craigslist and the county 'trading post' internet stuff, where do you all sell excess cockerels and hens? A cursory search shows a livestock auction place in Enumclaw, which is hay and gone from where I am on the Peninsula. I know you can post ads on BYC, but that seems to work best for eggs/day olds, not older birds... Thoughts? Trying to think ahead to next year, when I will probably be overwhelmed with animals... :)

Check your feed stores too. I have 2 in my area that take roosters nd try to sell em

I advertise on Craigslist and have found great homes for several roosters. I sold a rooster to a guy on Whidbey island, then sold 2 pair of offspring, ten another rooster nd some hatching eggs to the same guy. Not only found a good home but found a fellow crazy chicken friend who also loves my favorite breed. Any aggressive boys get put down. But some of my boys have gotten some great homes and flocks of their own

Guess I'll have to go farmer stalking. The internet and local adverts have yielded nada.

That's so interesting... Makes some sense though, since you don't have any control over how well they will cull/select offspring... Yet at the same time, if the person is placing themselves sort of under tutelage or dang what's the word ____ / journeyman / master etc. with high input, would you not be proud of the results?
Things to mull.
My concerns are more for the far more numerous times someone buys birds from a good breeder, turns them to garbage in a year (it can be done) and then uses that name to sell their offspring for inflated prices.

If I'm mentoring someone, and they got birds from me and did well with them I'd be very proud, but I would rather see them take the credit for their hard work. There's very little that I have found that feels as good as seeing someone you have taught and mentored do well.

Living in the City of Tacoma...

I cannot decide if this RIR is a hen or a rooster. I got the 3 of them when they were 5 weeks old back in April. Opinions?

You have the perfect thing going with that guy I think.

Hi all. I am completely new to this forum. We're moving to Maple Valley next week and instead of packing, I'm researching coops and chicken breeds. I don't have much to add right now, mostly just wanted to register, pop in, and say hi.

I'm hoping to have a coop ready for chicks next spring 2014. Right now I'm leaning towards Buff Orpingtons.

So, hi!
