Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

We have guns for this!

We have a coyote who wiped out my neighbors laying flock of 20 chickens. When she came home from work, he was trotting down the road with one in his mouth. Last week the chickens were making a huge ruckus. My husband went behind the barn where the noise is and there that coyote was. He wasn't 20 feet from our chickens. Bill chased it down the hill. He has a .22 in the barn now in case he returns but so far not.

I am wondering if there are people you can pay to hunt a coyote in southwestern washington?

I live in Winlock so I have heard of Cathlamet. What breeds do you raise?
I know where Winlock is too!

Oh what breeds??? That is such a slippery question around here. I "currently" have Blue Copper Marans, Lavender Amerucanas, Welsummers, Buff Orpingtons, a couple of RIR hens, Olive Egger and Easter Eggers. I am not happy with the Wels so I found someone with better quality pullets and cockerels and I am going to get hatching eggs once they get past the pullet egg stage, she also has beautiful BBS English Orpingtons and I am planning on hatching some of those too. I am looking for some Crested Cream Legbars for blue eggs as it turns out that lavender chickens are hawk magnets and this place is full of hawks! The Marans may stay or go, I haven't decided. Most of the OE and EE chicks will go as I replace them with the other breeds I mentioned. It really is a revolving door. I get hatching eggs, raise them decide if I like their personalities, if they are a good fit, etc. I am still working on figuring out what I want to raise.

What about you?

Hey There and Welcome to all the New Folks!

To those discussing the area around Colville and Kettle Falls.... Remember the winters can get really cold with deep snow.

Although it's a beautiful area the economy is always a challenge in that part of the state. I've had family there as long as I can remember, and they work really hard to make it all work. I love visiting, but I'm too much of a sissy to make it my permanent home.
Hi Carolyn,
Thanks for the reminder about winter! It is certainly a consideration and we have given it a lot of thought. My husband loves winter!

We will be retiring and aren't planning on working, we have looked and know the unemployment rate is very high. I think the last time I looked it was something like 14 - 16% which is crazy. We live a semi homesteader lifestyle now and plan on increasing that so our needs are pretty simple.

Any tips anyone has will be appreciated though! I am sure there are plenty of things we haven't though of yet.

I have a flock of egg layers of quite a few breeds - My layer hens are 1 Cuckoo Maran - she is the only one left of my very first chickens. She is 2 1/2 years old and lays a large darker brown egg with speckles. 2 Easter Eggers that lay blue-green eggs, 1 Black Jersey Giant that lays a lovely medium dark brown egg; 1 Welsummer who lays a darker brown egg, 4 Rhode Island Red pullets - I am getting small pullet eggs of a medium brown at this time, 2 Black Australorp pullets who are giving me pinkish pullet eggs - but they are getting bigger! 3 leghorn pullets who are laying white eggs that are getting bigger, and finally a "mystery chick" that has turned out to be a very large white pullet... who lays a beautiful olive green colored egg! Last of all, I have two 7 week old Black Jersey Giant/Cochin chicks that my broody Easter Egger hatched and brooded for me. I am pretty sure they are roos because they didn't get feathers on their heads until they were 5 weeks old. They are jet black with feathered legs. They are going to be huge! Here is a picture of one of them with their broody Mom:

and here is a picture of the eggs I am getting:

I am starting to breed Araucana. I have 2 tufted BBred roosters and one clean faced gold something "baby" rooster. He is quite confused. Today there was a horrible screech/scream emanating from their pen so he is trying to crow.

Later on, he was clucking like hen,

Pretty silly boy.

I have 1 BBred hen a red pyle hen who lay lovely blue eggs, and 4 dark colored and blue pullets who have not started laying yet. Here are some pictures of them:

Right now, I have 8 Easter Egger eggs and 11 Araucana eggs in the incubator. This is my very first attempt at incubating and I am on day 18. I just "locked them down". So far all 19 eggs have been developing. I am on pins and needles hoping I have done everything right.

What kind of chickens do you have/breed?

I love your colorful egg basket!!! Your boys are very pretty.

Best of luck with incubating! It is great fun! AND addicting!

Dianne... Where did you get the SFH eggs? Are they local? Wish I had acerage, I'd like to have more chickens!!! You have such a nice mix, I'm jealous!
The eggs are from my flock...the roo is from Greenfire (last years's chick) and the hens are babies whose parents are from Greenfire. I plan on getting about 5 more hens to round out the flock.....they have been great layers so far.

OK, I've been trying to come up with SFH since last night and it's not happening: what breed, please?

Sorry about that! SFH is Swedish Flower Hen, and for those that are unfamiliar with them, "Hen" is used regardless of age or gender of this breed. Greenfire has a very interesting writeup for them if you're interested.

Diane.... Thanks. You said they are great layers... how many eggs per week & what size are they. Mine girl's egga are still small after 3 weeks and maybe 4 per week so far but it's early yet.

AH. I probably would have remembered except for the lumps I've taken the past two weeks plus.

I get a root canal Thursday, how very fun.

Carol,

I have four hens and every day I get two, and maybe three eggs. They free range, get layer, corn, oats, barley, fresh fruit and grass and leftovers. Egg size is equal or bigger than a RIR. I do find, most of their area in under shade (trees) and they are laying more than my RIR and Marans. It is much cooler in their area and I am sure that helps in the egg production. They get the same feed as the other areas. I saw their chicks (3 months olds) before I got them and they were very colorful and some had nice crests. I have some eggs in the incubator and then going to out some CL and Blue Marans eggs so won't be hatching any out soon.

Diane~
