I assumed the straw and shavings were first used as bedding That's what I meant anyway. No, DH isn't involved in any of my garden projects, except for moving big rocks that I can't move LOL. I have 3 barrels that I'm using and just rolling them around as-is, drilled holes in them, but no stand or anything. It is working fine!

I hope every body's weekend was wonderful!

I had a GREAT! weekend!! Not in the sense of the project I am supposed to be getting done for work, but, in the I finally got my coop STARTED!!! This could have been the happiest weekend of my life....*sigh*

Floor...check.
Two Sides...check!

OK, so I didn't get as far as I wanted, but am glad that my carpenters are allowing me to do the coop I wanted!!

Early 1900's safe, it is about 3ft tall and 2 1/2 ft wide. A dark forsest green, it is a Shaw & Walker safe. Very cool and we do have the combo for it lock in our gun safe, we have never used this safe but it came with this house when we bought it. DH is asking $500.

Clark 24 volt charger $100.

30 ton press with dyes, $900.

Hydrolic Turchan pump unit and tank, 3 phase, model HD91. $900

2 bench grinders. $50 each

2 sets of Victer torches with tanks. $400 each

I'm thinking LxW -- and should be fine for 2 birds, given that they are only there to sleep.

I am fortunate that I have a fair amount of land and a good sized shop. Keep an eye on craigs list - you should be able to find stuff that lets you put a simple coop and run together for not a lot of cash. I think Slingling just posted a run - that and an apple bin and you'd be in business. You can get apple bins over here (Yakima) for around 15 bucks.

Recently there was a craigslist add here (yakima.craigslist.com) that was for 'calf boxes' .. 4'x8' enclosures/shelters made out of plywood -- for 15 bucks each. The guy had a lot of them for sale -- I think he was in Ellensburg. They looked to me like what you'd use to raise veal. Something like that would work really well too.

Really large dog crates are good for a couple of new birds. I look for small tractor coops too. You can also keep them in a crate at night and build a PVC run for the yard during part of the day. I don't have a lot of coops.

Thank you all for your help. Having a rough dimension is a big help as are all the answers and ideas. I feel much more comfortable now and I've been able to move along to other parts of the equation. I think DH and I have some pretty good ideas now! The hard part is waiting for weather good enough to act on them! He seemed anxious to get started with the prep work. And while I was laying in bed before dawn this morning, unable to sleep, I came up with a couple real dillies! I just love those quiet pre-dawn hours when I'm able to solve most all of the world problems!!

I am so tierd now....
Today I decided to give the coop a face lift! So I took out all the ladders that were in there for roosts, took down the rest of the old deviding wall that I had cut a section out of to let the chickens use the whole building and I took the nest boxes down off the wall. I had put them all the way up to the top of the wall before I read that they like it to be closer to the floor and their roosts higher.
But now all is fixed, I put in 3, 8ft long 2x4's up for roosts and will be adding one more. Put the nest boxes on the floor and a few other things. When I type it out it does not seem like that much but there was so much stuff that I had to take out of the coop and now have a pocket full of at least 50-60 screws!

I would like more info on the pipe bender please. And are torch tanks owner tanks or rentals?
