Poultry Nipple issues
So I have the push-in style nipples with a stainless pin and have attached them to every type of bottle I can get my hands on, including sacrificing a perfectly good Nalgene bottle. The problem I'm having is that they seem to work great for a week, then they leak. Not from where they are pushed into the bottle, but from the pin. It just constantly drips. I'll wake up to a flooded section of the brooder. I've tried a regular, open waterer, but they get it full of bedding and poop and I come home to them not having enough clean water. I've got a small dish under the bottle now to catch the drippings, and in one hour it's overflowing.
Anyone else have a similar problem?

I picked up Sagitas, combo meat and egg birds....   1 Lavender Orpington and 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte for broody hens...  I am new to this chicken thing so I'm still learning.....

Would you happen to have a picture of your Wyandotte? Did you go to Brewster to their farm to pick up the birds or meet them? Reason I ask is because I talked to my wife's aunt and she didn't have very nice things to say about the property or conditions the birds were hatched and living in. I'd like to purchase from a clean breeder.

I picked the birds up at their farm.... The birds pens were clean.... water was clean.... food was in feeders.... the birds were all healthy looking.... they have probably 300 birds in 20-30 pens.... the pens were about 14x20..... Metal garden sheds for coops.... open air coops and runs.... under poplar trees for shade.... As far as what the place looks like, I was more concerned as to how the owners (Bro and Sis) took care of the birds..... The have new incubators in a separate shed built just for hatching.... I spent about 2 hours with "Bro", one of the owners.... Very nice gentleman and very knowledgeable.... He lets the birds out of their pens to free range daily... maybe only for 15 minutes but with that many birds it's a chore, plus feeding and watering and coop and run cleaning and incubating/hatching.... and it shows his dedication to maintaining the flock... and Sis has a full time job... Bro is a "one man marching band"... I highly respect both of them....

Granted, it's not the fanciest setting, just 2 hard working Americans trying to make it in this tough economy...

I'd like to purchase from a clean breeder. Please forget that I suggested "Just Fowling Around" as somewhere you could get birds...

Have a good evening....

Try the spring loaded horizontal nipples... they work fine for me.... I think the non-loaded nipples need 2 or three psi to keep them closed.... they won't work in small bottles too well, especially if you happen to get the "cheap" ones... there are different manufacturers out there...

Good nipples......

I used these bottle cap nipples from mypetchicken in the brooder with no dripping or any other problems. Actually I'm still using them. It's been 6 months and they're still working fine.

From the last few lines of your reply it seems that I may have offended you or hit a nerve. Not my intentions. I'm not here to bash or trash talk anyone or any outfit especially if I don't personally know the person or company.

I asked my aunt her opinion on JFA same as I asked the folks on BYC for theirs. She gave me her opinion same as you gave me yours. I'm taking both opinions into consideration. If 100 folks gave me their opinions I would consider each and every one of them on making my decision to do or not do business with a person or company.

The way you have described "bro and sis" at JFA and their facilities has made a great impression on my decision to deal with them. I have been swapping emails with JFA this afternoon. They sent me many pics of their birds and facilities. They do not currently have the birds I am looking for but I am on the list for spring chicks.

Again I am not here to offend or disrespect anyone and my apologies if that's how I came across. I joined this forum to gain knowledge and to get the advice and opinions from other members. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction earlier. Have a great night.

We always put a 1/16" hole in the top of the container so the pressure inside can equalize. this stops the nipple from forcing it to equalize the air inside all of the time. which is why it drips (my experience).

Dave's spring loaded nipples he suggests might help too : )

Ashley, did you poke a hole in the top of the bottle to allow air in? If not, that is probably your problem. When the air has to sneak in through the nipple it is probably letting water out.
