Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

waiting for incubating eggs is torture! I was sitting on my porch the other morning heard an owl off to the left of me.. I knew was an owl over to the right maybe same owl..but I know they are there

I'm probably repeating myself but this summer looked out the window to see what the racket was by the barn to see a Bald Eagle munching on one of my special hens…I was in awe since it was already dead, it was huge, and beautiful….

It also bears remembering that big cats are around us and can be in the trees above as we walk into the woods…..We lost a medium llama sized pet alpaca to one several years ago….chased through several 5 strand hot wire fences……when found just a mound of white wool, partial leg and back. I'm in a populated area very close to town….

yep seen a few cougars in marysville on the rez in populated subburban neighborhoods as well

Holy crap! A coyote in the middle of the day!? That must have been one very desperate dog.

About 7-8 years ago I had a pair of ducks nesting on my porch in a planter (crazy ducks)  and one morning I went out and the drake was dead. That night at about 3 am I hear a rustle and squaking on the porch so I go running out in my underwear. I can't really see much but I can hear the animal running away so I chase it. Accross the yard, over a stone embankment, through the driveway and it runs up a cherry tree. I have no idea what I'm chasing but It's silent other than it's feet on the ground, I go back in the house and get a flash light and my glasses on and walk back out to the cherry tree and as I'm walking up to the tree something jumps from the ground up the trunk of the tree and hangs there about 6 feet off the ground.

MOUNTAIN LION!

It was late fall and she had 2 cubs on the ground at the base of the cherry tree. I'm not sure why she had cubs so late but she must have been desperate to feed them to take my ducks off my front porch. At that point, I was more than happy to let her eat my duck hen, who was dead by now anyway and I was standing there 15 feet from her cubs in my underwear.  I  went back to the house and collected the eggs out of the nest and hatched them.
That was on Hwy 9 North in Sedro Wooley.

I look back on that and can't believe I chased a mt lion in my underwear over a duck!!!

Holy Sh!!t that would have scared me to death

Yes, the coyotes are out during the day. I saw one in the pasture one day around 10:00, which is exactly the time we lost a hen and a cockerel in the summer. Now the chickens can't go out to free range until after 11:00. They are getting smarter and staying close to our pony (who hunts furry animals for fun). Still, out best rooster got attacked by a coyote about a month ago.

We tried to treat our rooster with TLC, antibiotics and tube feeding. He was getting better, but then called it quits one day. We had to put him down. It was our first one we had to put down and it was terribly hard to do. It was the right thing and the right time, but we still miss him. He makes the cutest babies!
X2
I had a coyote come midday too and now one of my roosters only has one eye. Ladies love him anyway.

But, I got patches my 8 month old hen who should be laying soon. She's just been woken up and her feathers are pretty flat and laid down. During the day she's pretty poofy and looks much larger. And yes, she's on top of the clothes dryer :)

Hi, wondering if anyone has ordered from Cackle hatcheries??? I found a catalog received from last year and it has actual bird pictures, not drawings and most of the birds seem like they are colored as they should…..There is a real problem with Salmon Faverolles from several of the hatcheries that look like they have some odd smutty colored cousin or something and getting worse as we see pictures from folks on the Faverolles thread who have purchased them from their feed store/hatcheries……... The Cackle pics are fairly true to breed, just wondering if the actual birds reflect that……any other hatcheries that someone can recommend for those wishing to got that route????

Was curious and went to the Cackle website, specifically Salmon Faverolles and there is a pic of their daughter showing a hen, and one of both male and female that look fairly nice and colored well……

Thats the name i hear allot as well as Ideal…. Cackle comments regarding their pics is that they are not all theirs but they try to breed the best representation that is shown, knowing that there are variations….but strive for the SOP. I have ordered from Sandhill as well but quite a few years ago…
