Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Yeah, I've had that same cold virus for two weeks. Every other day my throat hurts so bad that I don't want to eat or drink because it hurts to swallow. Today is a bad day, so hopefully tomorrow I can catch up on eating. LOL

Today I made it to the feed store and picked up a 40 pound bag of Layena for $13.49. Next week the flock raiser and scratch grains will be on sale so I'll have to go back and load up the barn. Five cents a pound doesn't seem like a big difference, but when you are buying 250 pounds of feed at a time a little savings goes a long way.

Uggghh. I think I just realized I have too many birds.

So stinking cute! All of them! In the kitties bed, am I seeing alpaca fiber? How fun you have so many varieties of babies at the same time. You could make an adorable calendar of photos of them

We have 2 grown cats and 2 grown doggies - while part of me loves the puppy/kitten stage - I'm relieved we aren't having the potty accidents, the scratching, chewing, etc.

Nope that is sheep wool.

Hi guys !
So, I have had the viral cold from @#$% and then Einstein got it & gave it back to me & in the interim, Dec 26th I had a bad gut attack (stricture) ended up in the ER, to make a long story short...I am OK (for now) and have surg postposned cuz I had the pnuemonia.
BUT
Sunshine & Einstein & I are outside, and doing better & getting herbs & plants started & getting the fruit trees pruned & shot with dormant oil & got the green house power washed & all the tribulations of spring~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

2 settings of Bielefelders, and 1 set of Pekings has my little bator full......................so I am having to fire up the gQf cabinet tomorrow.
Transfer the eggs that are incubating now to the gQf...and use the little bator for hatching.................

So, how is everyone else doing ?????????????

Getting seeds ready ?????
:ya

Wow.it sounds like everything has hit you pretty good.

I'm working on getting my greenhouse put together. Should have it done this weekend

We've been using Baxter Barn layer and high protein crumble. Nice solid shells from the start with no misfires. It's a bit more pricey $18/50lb layer $26/50 lb high protein. We also make our own flock blocks they gobble up quickly( i make a huge batch and freeze half).

We get it from Fall City at the farm and Portage Bay Grange in Seattle. The girls love it and they look very healthy.

I was told not to use Nutrena or Purina. The protein amount isn't high enough for daily/production layers. They recently added Marigold/Calendula petals to improve yolk color.

OH and thanks for the Welcome!!!!!!!!!

I like Excel feeds. I wish it were closer!

At my local store, Purina pellets are $19.99 per bag. They have a cheaper brand that is around $18 per bag, and the organic stuff is about $32 for 50 pounds.

X-cel is only about 15 minutes from my house. We used to stop there and bring a load of grain to Buckley to my friend for a while.

Gee... after I wrote the post above I saw SEVERAL other new people!

Hello

and Welcome to everyone! Spring always seems to bring a batch of new members along with the new chics. Both are equally fun I think.

It's interesting see what everyone chooses to feed their chickens. There's such an array of choices. I typically get Purina Layena or Flock Raiser and find that Wilco puts it on sale every now and then. A 40# bag of Layena is $11 right now. Flock Raiser and Start & Grow are larger bags - 50 # - for $15. I can save about $3 per bag when they do that. If anyone wants to stock up when the prices are good, remember you can freeze feed just like any other food. To make it more manageable you can put it into smaller containers to fit in better, too.

X-Cel feed is also available directly from the mill in Tacoma at a slightly lower price. I've never gotten there during business hours but I know others do. I've heard differing opinions about it, just like everything else.

I'm going to have to do some research because there's got to be a pellet out there that's organic that can have the same or similar results. Research research research.... I've got a lot of time on my hands so.

X-Cel is cheaper. We bought bags of it for the horses when I trained full time and mixed our own grains. It's generally good feed but like you said it's directly from the mill. I think everyone I've talked to who doesn't like it are people I've known who are used to buying the nice mixed grains with no dust. And I'm not talking about bad dust, just dust from processing and stuff. I'll probably end up using it until I get this organic thing figured out.

My 8 year old noticed the bullseye in our duck eggs and asked about it. I told her it is normal. Should I explain it to her? Or should I worry about freaking her out? It freaks my husband out a little if I talk to him about the details of things like that. Lol.
