Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Lol Please introduce me to a 4 year old who doesnt get into trouble! lol Chloe is doing much better, truely enjoys being a big sister, and no longer acts out because of jelousy. But man oh man, can you ever tell she is my daughter! She's got my take no crud attitude! And she's a sneak! Already trying to take and hide things. then gets mad because I catch her in the act. "You saw that Mom? How?" lol Then she storms off to her room in a huff. She has learned already to not slam her bedroom door. if she slams the door, we take the door away. And you would think we gave her dog away or something! lol

I know, I know. Bad Momma for laughing. But its funny I swear!
Oh dear taking the door away is awesome !!
I never would have thought about that !!!!!!!!!!!!!

At first I was very worried how she would act when no longer the only child...but she must be growing up !!!

Miss Chloe sounds a lot like my daughter. I always sort of knew where to look for missing things at my house. It was nearly inevitable that I would find things in my Erin's room. She had a thing for office supplies, and containers. If she was given a purse, she was always happy a happy camper. Erin would get mad at me for catching her doing things, or if I did something that she couldn't do yet. I can still remember how mad she got because I could play one song on the piano.

The best part is knowing that a child like this, really can be anything she wants to be as an adult. It can be a little scary and intimidating at times to know how smart your child is. lol I love your solution for slamming the door. I love when the consequences are directly related to the provocation. I often read about parents grounding kids, and I have never really understood it. When I was growing up there was nothing that we could be ground from. We were nearly always at home anyway, and we had to go to church no matter what. So I don't ever remember being grounded. We got disciplined other ways. Some of it was good and some bad.

I was even more careful about making sure that the punishment fit the crime with my kids. It must have worked, because both kids have been able to become self supporting, contributing members of society. They both moved out shortly after they turned 18, and have never needed to come home because they couldn't make it on their own. I am very proud of both of my kids.

My sister & BiL just bought a home to retire in, in Bend OR.
Last night she sent a text that it was snowing big time there.
I heard on the news Bend was maybe getting up to 10"....hope she has her car's snow boots on !!!

Time to start looking into getting the studs on~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was 34 degrees & super foggy here this morning...fog boiling off the river makes the road very icy.......

Quote: Yes girly the only reason for the size of mine is that is a common wabbit cage and I had it laying around.

I know very few people who have wabbit cages just laying around.

I found that by going to the chicken auction here in town, that things like bunny cages can simply follow a person home.

This is the only explanation that I can come up with as to why I have an extra bunny cage at my house now.

Rene; if you would like to borrow it, just give me a PM. The cage has two sections, but it should work for what you need it for. My DH will be coming through Auburn at about 8:30am. He is willing to meet you at the Arco gas station that is by the Casino. Otherwise we can work something else out.

Woohoo, I found a little cedar coop that I can use for quarantine! (And some meat chicks next spring!) It cost less than the materials for building a tractor would have run me, and this one has a nice, small footprint. I already put a wider perch in, and I'm going to paint the floor and interior walls this weekend. I also need to replace the chicken wire around the bottom run with hardware cloth, and make a door on one side. You could tell the builder didn't have chickens. There's no way to get a bird out from the run! It also doesn't have a nest box, but until I get an adult bird that won't matter. I'll pick up a kit from the feed store so I can add one whenever I need it.

This little coop has a door about 1'X2' covered with hardware cloth. Is this going to let in too much of a draft in the winter? Should I cut a board to fit in the door? I could also rig up a guillotine style door to cover the pop hole, which is on the floor of the coop and has nothing to cover it right now. It's just an open hole leading onto the ramp. I'm glad this isn't going to be a permanent coop, as something could dig under the wall, come in from underneath and go right up into the coop. Although I could set the whole thing on the concrete patio and nothing will get in or out.

Oh, I've got another question on silkies! I know they can't fly. Can they get up onto a roost a foot off the ground?

Jennifer

Mine can!!! He is the only Silkie with all LF, so I guess it's monkey-see-monkey-do!! When I first got him at around 9m/o he slept by himself on the floor, but now he jumps up the ladder to roost with the others. I've seen him on an outdoor roost that is around 2ft off the ground!!

If it were me, I would bring paper soft paper, like toilet paper and wrap the eggs and put them in the camping egg container. And then put the egg container into another box or some sort of protective container. ;)  Maybe a safe? :gig Sorry, I remember having kids that age that get into everything and then usually brake or damage something. OH! My bad! They still do! :he

I transport hatching eggs in a carton, and nestle the carton in a bed of fresh shavings, in an ice chest...with a blue freezy to keep them cool.
The shavings prevent alot of vibrations that can harm the eggs....

That's a fantastic way to do it! I am keeping that in mind for later! Thanks CL!

No, my son is hosting a 3K track time-trial between his school and their rival school. KMHunter reffered me to Marjorie Best and she has eggs I am gonna buy. My DW is gonna be so eggsited in 3 weeks.

I got my sweet little Miss To-too from Marjorie Best at last years show. To-too is so sweet and docile, and is a gorgeous porcelain color. Marjorie only sold her, because the porcelain color isn't recognized as of yet.

I told her color was not important, she said they will be bearded silkies. I am calling her tomorrow afternoon(my DW is home and almost spoiled it when she opened the laptop and I had an email from Marge) but luckily she just thought it was a question being answered by someone on BYC. Whew, almost spoiled the surprise part. I can't wait. YAY
I don't think that Marjorie lives very far from you either. I am excited that you are going to be able to get such good quality Silkies. Marjorie has been showing chickens for more years than most of us have even been alive. She was very informative about the WFF club, and showing.
Does anyone know if she will be coming to the show next week? I would love to meet her.
I would assume that she will be there. She has been showing for many years at this show, and she was there last year. I will do what I can to introduce you to Marjorie. My DH will not be able to come to the show this year. He will traveling home on Saturday, so there is no way.

If any one would like to meet up to share the drive to the show, in either Bonney Lake, Sumner, Puyallup, or at the intersection of Hwy 512 and I-5, I would be happy to share my ride the rest of the way to Chehalis. I have a car that seats 5, and I should have some extra space in the back of my wagon for anything extra to and from the show.
JB, I asked her yesterday when I called her, she will be at the show. She did say that she may not go anymore though, said it is getting harder and harder with age. But she is a hoot on the phone.

I'm in Lacey and these cold temps are making me nervous. I've got a well insulated coop but this morning it was only 40 degrees in there. How do I know if my chickens are too cold? They all acted normally and were ready to get out and do their thing in the yard, no visible signs of distress or unhappiness but I'm worried about them.
Who heats their coops? Do you have a heat lamp or other source of heat? Do you have some type of sensor that will initiate the heat source when the temp drops below a certain point or do you do it manually?
If you don't heat your coop, how do you know your chickens are warm enough? What types of signs would I look for in a chicken that was too cold?

Thanks washington chicken forum friends. I'm new at having chickens and always a perpetual worrier.

They don't really need the heat. The thermometer said we hit 21 last night here. There is no frost in either coop, even though the one is big and has a large opening. Even the 8 week old silkies weren't cold enough to snuggle under the adults last night. When I checked on them all around 11 they were all spread out. This morning at 6:30 they were all out playing in the heavy frost yelling for me to bring them food and liquid water.

This is a good question! Especially considering the fact that I lost a 9ish week old last night to what I'm pretty sure was the cold! There was no signs at all of a predator, just a dead chick. This is the 3rd one I've lost in 2 weeks. I don't know what's going on. Everybody looks fine, is eating, drinking, chirping, active, clean, dry...just all of a sudden, dead. Anyone else have chicks close to this age outside full time yet? Or is it to soon, to cold, to young?

I have 9 week old out. They have a little coop for night but no heat no lights. They seem to be doing fine!!!
I have 8.5 week olds in the grow-out tractor. The only protection from wind is the tarp over it to keep it dry. I do have a brooder lamp on a large lag screw and has the 150W bulb. Keeps the roost bar that it is over at about 40-50 degrees. I am weening them off in by 30 minutes a day. They have been in it for 3 weeks now. By next week they should be off the light completely.

On the drive back from Lakewood around 4 am Friday morning in CR's neighborhood it was 30 according to tractor's outside temp gauge and the fog was crystalising on the highway edge. Gotta love that freezing fog.

Questions about the upcoming show next weekend...

1. Can anyone bring any bird to the show to sell or rehome? Or are they show birds only? Members only?

2. If you can bring any bird, are there specific guidelines you have to follow? Vaccinations? Anything?

3. Anyone want a Bantam English Game Roo? Under a yr., very handsome but needs to be the only roo and I don't have the ability right now to have multiple set ups. Everyone here is all in the same critter house.
I would post this question on the thread for the Chehalis show. Look under forums- Chickenstock, gatherings, shows(something like that) Then look for the WFF Winter show, Chehalis. Unless CR can repost the link. I couldn't get it to post.
