Gah! Frustrating weekend! On Friday we got our first egg from our 3 faverolles mutts. On Sunday the chickens were making such constant and shrill bawking noises(for many hours) that my husband finally put his foot down(it was loud enough that we could hear them with the windows closed, AC on, and watching TV). He was concerned about having loud hens and becoming "that neighbor" with the noisy pets before we got them. I gave them away to a neighbor a few miles away to join her flock. Turns out that the worst offender was a cockerel that had not yet started crowing (at 4.5-5 months?!). I was devastated, but also totally understand his concern. After some time went by, he agreed to ONE MORE trial with chickens that have been specifically vetted as "quiet". Another neighbor has a flock that they are downsizing, so we are going to try one more time for quiet girls before reluctantly giving up on chickens

until we move to a larger lot and won't have to worry about neighbor proximity. If you guys have any input or suggestions, I would love to take them. I really want this to work but it is not worth constant tension in my marriage and neighborhood.

My girls did this when they were at the point of lay. I think they were confused about what was going on with their bodies. Once they were all laying they were pretty quiet except for their egg songs after laying an egg. I was reminded of this because my mama hen just weaned her six-week-old babies and now she's making a racket. I think she's getting ready to start laying again and she's jumping in and out of the nest box and squawking. She's also being very grumpy and mean to all the other chickens including her own babies. I'm assuming it will all calm down soon when she starts laying again. At least I hope so.

Dang, I thought I was loosing my brains for a while there, and boy would I LOVE to see her Mahoganies !!!
And Blue Salmon !
She got her birds from Jeanine.

As we were COVERED with 3-6" of feathers...I gutted each coop, and did fresh shavings & nest box materials....and gave myself a good scrubbing afterwards.

Then I realized my Silver Cuckoo Cock has lost his entire rump ! Boy does he look odd....Araucana odd !
I have to move a feww more juvies into the adult coops...and a few more culls, and we'll be set for fall worming.

I have decided to stop watering 3/4 of my garden.
I am just doing the green beans, 1 zucchini, (that's all ya need !) and the blueberries & beets.
Done.
I am done & wells are running very slow here, after a pump, recovery takes quit a while.
Our wells have floats, so when the well is full, the float raises & it pumps.
When the float does not raise, well....there is no more water.

Pray for rain !

My hens can make far more noise than the cocks do...in fact, one will begin to lay & they will all go off, cocks, cockerels, pullets & hens...all singing cuz 1 hen is laying an egg.
