Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I'm really new to chickens (got my first chicks this spring). My blue cochin is around 6 months old now, and has laid her first 4 eggs over the past week. Today I went in and she had planted what looked like a huge egg compared to what she had laid previously (her previous eggs were smaller than these ones in the picture). Is this normal?? The darn thing didn't fit in the carton. Will this hurt her? If so, is there anything I can do about it?

New layers do that. My hens have the same size eggs now, but we got some huge ones to begin with. That's got to hurt. Check out the weird egg thread.

Whew - thank you! I was thinking that had to be a little hard on her, and was worried that she'd hurt herself doing that - yikes. It's so much fun to see who laid an egg each day when they first start giving you eggs - but I got a little bit concerned awhen I found one that size :) Now I'll have to eat it to find out if it's a double!

My cuckoo marans do the same thing after molting, and some of my birds just lay rather large eggs. Duck eggs are impressive too, they leave you with sympathy pains!

Does anyone Whatcom County local want some water kefir grains? I have an excess of very healthy ones!

Wish I lived close by, I'd like to try WK. I just finished my first batch of Milk Kefir, it's an interesting process. Well, the results are the most interesting. Do you have favorite flavors/recipes? I think I saw rootbeer mentioned somewhere. Right now Kombucha seems the easiest for me, which is exactly what I was told, and I'm enjoying it very much.

So bummed!

A bear came sometime in the night, broke off the door to one of our smaller coops that housed my silkies and got 3 out of the 4.

That is heart breaking!

It would take a fortress to guard against something that big and strong. Fingers crossed that the eggs hatch for you.

Thank you Carolyn. The little hen laid another egg this morning so I threw that one in too. Hoping they hatch so she'll have some Silkie friends. Even though she's around a year old She's way too small to be with the main flock.

I've never been so happy to see a DEAD hawk! Normally I'm not the kind of person that would rejoice over that...but I own chickens now so one less hawk in the area makes me very happy! The thing flew into a window!! I've seen other birds knock themselves out into a window, but a bloomin' hawk?! Crazy!
