Two skunks walk into a church. The minister says, "Let us pray." The first skunk says to the second skunk, "You heard the man!"

Ole is a farmer in Minnesota. He is in need of a new milk cow and hears about a nice one for sale over in North Dakota. He drives West, finds the farm and looks at the cow. Ole reaches under to see if she gives milk. When he grabs the teat and pulls, the cow farts. Ole is very surprised. He looks at the farmer who is selling the cow, then reaches under the cow to try again. He grabs another teat, pulls, and the cow farts again. Milk does come out, however, so after some discussion with the cow's current owner, Ole decides to buy the cow and take it home. When he gets back to Minnesota, he calls over his neighbor, Sven, and says, "Hey, Sven, come and look at dis here new cow I yust bought. Pull her teat, and see vat happens." Sven reaches under, pulls the teat, and the cow farts. Sven looks at Ole and says, "You bought dis here cow in Nortdakota didn't ya?" Ole is very surprised since he hadn't told Sven about his trip. Ole replies, "Yah, dat's right. But how did you know?" Sven says, "My wife is from Nortdakota."

They are good at walking across and turning it into a fine slurry. I sink a few inches so straw goes in to stop that.

I do not add straw anymore...it worked fine for a few days but them the birds rotovate it into the poop soup & it turns into very heavy & thick adobe MUD that I end up having to pitchfork out again (with the added weight of the mud this time) and it was hell on my back..
I have pea gravel in my runs, and I use the deep well pump (all by itself) to wash the clay slurry from the gravel, which creats a manureavalanch or poop soup running down the hill....and leaves the pea gravel nice & clean.

I don't have any slope. Just areas lower than other areas and those fill with water for several months of the year

This was the first year I didn't buy or hatch large fowl.
I need some of the pills you took to get rid of your Hatchititus !

My Black Ameraucana Cockereel just flew into a wall & broke his hip...and died 2 days later, unable to walk.

And I had him over 2 OEs, a splash & a blue, and 2 Black Am pullets.and I wanted BBS eggs to hatch....................
And I am collecting eggs now since they should still be fertile..................

SOMEBODY STOP ME !

Actually letting the ground mound up may be exactly what you need to creat a slope...try adding road base gravel, hay & maybe bark ? let it build up like a small hill....then water should run off.

I had to create a slope in our yard and it did take some time to accomplish but it is well worth it. If you can keep the water spreading over a wide surface as it goes down a slope you will get good drainage and the ground will dry out. We made the mistake of using shavings on the ground one year and the smell of the wet shavings was terrible and it just made a squishy bog. We use shavings inside the coops where we have to clean them out all the time but not on the ground.

We put wood chips in our Silkie pen this year under a covered area built for shade and predator protection (not rain) so we will see if they work in combination with a bit of a rain break. They have alot of smaller mulch in them so I will probably have to keep hosing them down to get the smaller stuff to fall through and leave the bigger stuff on top.

I live on the edge of a marsh with soil that is full of clay. I'm just happy our septic works. The best spots have other things on them so the chickens get subprime locations. If I hose anything here, I have water on the ground for a while during half the year so I try and avoid adding water.

The soil has built up over time in the big pen and it doesn't have standing water anymore and is actually higher than the area around it. When we move everything over there so that the shop can be built, I'm hoping to have enough light so that I can put a garden patch there. I had a pen in the garden for two years. That is some awesome soil there now

Well, I live on the dry side of the state so even though we do get periods of rain it dries out in between. I have heard mixed reviews for straw but maybe people mean don't use it in the coop it's self because of books. I thought about maybe getting a bill and just throwing it in the run. P gravel is also an idea, but to add more rock to what already is basically rock just is too ironic. The mud dries up quickly compared to over on the west side but it still gets slick and icky. I guess I'll see what works and what mood I'm in when I get to the store as to whether I buy the straw or the pine shavings.

Here is one for Penny!!!

What's the difference between a doughnut and a deernut? Doughnuts are about $4 per dozen, deernuts are under a buck.
