Got the brooder set up. Thinking the heat lamp is to high- but I'll temp it to check first. Thinking of the Brinsea eco-brooder. Might just order it tonight. Eggs go into lock-down tomorrow afternoon... these past 18 days have flown, the last little bit seems to be creeping! LOL

Plastic tub brooders easily turn into chick ovens when using heat lamps. Heating pads are much safer, and allow chicks to better self-regulate their temps.

That is one thing I am worried about- I had the heat lamp already but have been seriously debating it since setting it up. I have my young grandchildren here during the week too- and it is a burn waiting to happen!

Junebuggena, how would you recommend doing a heating pad?

I use a Brinsea ecoglow. The chicks are used to running under so when putting them under a hen they are used to that.

Thank you Hinotori! Mine won't have an opportunity to go under a real hen, but the ecoglow or MHP seem like a much safer method. I am looking on past threads to learn about the MHP method. Also pricing the ecoglow via Amazon.

I switched to the Ecoglow with this last batch of chicks and I was very pleased with the results. Not only did it work nicer for the warmth but the lack of light allows the chicks to sleep more peacefully.

I used rubbery shelf liner in the bottom for the last chicks. Pulling it out and washing it off was easy. Chicks don't slip and nothing gets knocked in the water
