I think it's an Oregon or creeping Vole (AKA Oregon Fieldmouse); anything else it might be has naked ears.

We have voles here (field mice) and this thing is 4 or 5 X as big as a vole..it has a longer tail, and said tail is kinda flattened as if you took a thin mouse tail and rolled it out with a rolling pin.
Dished face, rather than roman nosed & long like a rat or mouse.

Unfortunately, the chances of getting as far as Monte today are right down there with flying to the moon on gossamer wings- I know the store you mean, for sure, though. Mud Bay doesn't carry it, but they do have a canned lecture on not using it for flea control (they're closest to me of any of the possibilities).
I guess I'll just do a dry-sand-and poultry dust dust bath tomorrow and see if I can find the strength of will to sit and make phone calls tomorrow, ugh.
Between Christmas coming and my daughter taking off for six days in Amsterdam with her fiance and his aunt (There's serious money around that family) I'm short on transportation, time, and money even more than usual.

Maybe sometime I grab ya a bag & drop by ????????????

I need some advice. I just looked in the garage brooder and found one of the while silkie chicks lying on its side. I brought it inside, gave it water, clipped a bunch of poo off it's cushion, and set it up under a lamp in a box. The poo looked normal and some of it was still soft (fresh). The eyes are clear but held closed most of the time and it trills constantly. It doesn't sneeze or cough or anything like that. I got it up on its feet in the box, but it's not moving around.

What could this be? I know the chicks weren't vaccinated for Mereks (sp?), could this be paralysis setting in?

What should I do next? I'll be googling how to care for sick chicks, but I'd love to hear from anyone who's on here! Thanks!

Pasty butt.
If the vent is pasted shut, the booger cannot poo & will die.
It is a form of constipation, and the babies need more fiber and water.
Pasty butt is something you have to look for with every new set of hatchlings...some breeds are more prone as others are, even on the same feed.
You have to get a warm bowl of water & small spong & stitz bath the chick's bottom & pick the crusted poo off their vents.

Mountain Beaver? I'm looking that up now.

This critter is the size of a small guinea pig.
Half the size of a grown adult guinea pig...ain't no beaver.

Again... Thank You CL. I just noticed the dirty fluff an one of my birds, but I checked her vent area and it looked clean. I hope that was the right thing to do . I just put a pan of dirt and DE in their pen 2 days ago since they haven't had a good area to dust bathe in all this rain. It was hilarious... nobody would put even one toe in it even to get sunflower seeds! Except miss bottom-of-the-order, she got her fill of seeds that time! It looks like they've gotten used to it now, though. And today I ushered them down to their old stomping grounds and I saw one, at least, having a great bath!

If you see a hen walking around with a dirty muddy cushion...she has mites, period.
DOUSE her in poultry powder, under the wings, all over the crouch & vent area !
If pissible, bath them first & remove any of the gobs of mites eggs, then poultry dust.

How do I get more fiber into their diet? They are on NatureSmart organic chick starter and have a quart waterer in their brooder that they never empty. I change it out every night with fresh water and Corid (tonight is the 7th dose). Should I give them some fresh pumpkin or greens?

It's SO true about not being over until closing. In '98 I sold my house in Shoreline to such a nice, very excited young couple. The day before closing I got a call from an attorney, bad news, over the weekend the wife had been killed in a freak accident. They were hiking up at the ice caves, she and her father walked inside one, just a few feet, and the archway collapsed on them, killing her. Such a horrible loss. THEN, when I got home that evening I listened to my phone messages. There was a msg. from the escrow company from 9 a.m. that morning telling me to come in the following day to sign the final papers. (Obviously they hadn't heard the news when they left the message.)

Two lessons learned.... it's not over until the papers are signed, and pay attention to the warning signs and Don't Go Into Ice Caves.

And never turn your back on the surf !!!
