Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Yay, the second chick hatched last night. So I have a Blue/Buff Orpington(SR) and a Blue Opr/BR pullet(no barring)

I will try and get a quick photo later today. They are so stinking cute and small. And one already pooed on me. Momma was ok with me handling them too.
Look forward to seeing the pictures, congrats on the chicks!

Gotta tell ya though, sometimes I wonder about people. Ever since a neighbor told my kids to stop bouncing a basketball in the cul-de-sac because it was too noisy, I've been on edge. I hate that feeling of walking on eggshells in your own neighborhood just to keep peace. Of course, I was just spiteful enough to have spent the next two weeks playing basketball WITH my kids in the cul-de-sac for a couple of hours each evening after that happened. As far as I know they haven't sent my kids back into the yard since. As far as I'm concerned if people want to live in a quiet 55+ environment, they need to move to a 55+ environment, because kids need to be allowed to be kids.

My husband said some of our neighbors are the type of people whose houses he would have egged when he was a teen. It made me laugh, especially thinking they'd better watch out - our kids will be teens in a few years, and we have a steady supply of eggs. LOL!
But please don't waste nice fresh eggs. let the eggs set out and get good and ripe first !!
I once had a neighbor here complain to another about the "noise" I make. Like saws, grinders, tractor etc. She soon learned what noisy really is. The shop stereo came on at 6:00. I need to hear music where ever I am on the front of 13 acres. Then I turned on the big work lights which just happened to need to be pointed toward her windows so I could see to safely run the chainsaw and log splitter. 8:00 I got quiet for a bit then at it again at 2:00 when I knew she liked to take a nap. And back at it about 8:00pm until 10:00pm. I do have some courtesy see from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am is quiet time to me. well it only took a few days and she was ready to call a truce!

6:00 am? I'd have poisoned you well.

I was going to get some new pictures taken today, but then it started pouring rain, and I didn't feel up to juggling a camera and an umbrella.

The sheep's feed box is rehung until he gets bored again, everything's fed and watered, and I'm getting my week's laundry finished. I hope. Assuming I don't run out of oomph.

And both dogs are snoring.

I'm not tiny by any means! LOL! I'm 5' 9". Cocoa and Rocha are huge for 6.5 weeks. Blackie is, too. Blackie is almost the size of Cocoa and Rocha. All three of them literally are about 1/2 -3/4 the size of my big girls Rhodie and Caunnie who are 9 months old. I'll try and get pics of the other two today. Maybe it's Cocoa, Rocha and Blackie that are just large for their ages and Latte is normal sized...

Wish me luck in finding my camera today. We took those other pics on a phone. The transfer process from phone to the computer process is still a little confusing.

That why I haven't posted the other pictures. I'm trying to think what event I took that camera to - I know I had it at the Veteran's Day Parade. Hmmmmm.

So maybe CR pumps his birds with createne or something

When we were kids, TP was our weapon of choice. We averaged 100+ rolls per house( and we did a lot back then, should have bought stock in Charmin). Thankfully all my neighbors are great, all 4 of them(that are within earshot of my rooster and other noises)

Hey - anyone else play the silly farm game on the ipod, iphone or ipad called "Hay Day"? OMG! I'm totally becoming an addict. The naked sheep crack me up. And the cheesy grins on the pigs faces are too funny. LOL! If you do play it, add me to your game center and it will help you expand your sales shop. I'm "itsRKC".
Well I don't play that game cause I don't have and "i" anything other than a small ipod. But I do play Mine Craft on the xbox. It looks like a really stupid game but it is really addicting. They have chickens, pigs and sheep on that game. You can sheer the sheep and they walk around naked, I think it is the funniest thing.
Just checking in. How is everyone? I can't read back very far so I only catch a couple pages every now and then, bummer. This weekend I have 3 extra kids; I'm watching my sister's boys while they take their girls on a trip. Eek! Doubling kids for a weekend is fun but a lot of work! It's also one of their birthdays today so we're baking cupcakes and having a nice dinner to celebrate with him. Hoping to catch up more later!
I have always had a steady stream of extra kids at my house. During the summer I can have up to 15 kids here almost every day (yes that inclueds my 5 kids). Some times if my kids are stressing me out a bit, I do the opposite of most people. Instead of having my kids all go somewhere, I let them all have friends over so it gets really loud and crazy around here. That way when all the extra kids leave, my 5 seam quiet and calm! LOL

So I need to tell some one this, but anyone here at home would tell my DH. I found an add on CL for 8wk old great dane 50%- shepherd 25%- lab 25% mix pups. So I am getting one for DH for Christmas. He wants a mutt, I love mutts to but great danes have my heart. They are only $100 and the guy has 15 of them!!!! He is in a hurry to find them homes. I can't wait, I really hope DH likes it.

Here are the 2 chicks that hatched yesterday and last night.

Blue/Buff Orp

Both, Blue Orp/BR has back turned

We can't tell yet for sure if the Opr/BR is barred. I hope it is so I can start working on Blue Barred Rocks

And need to give credit for the hand modeling of my 16 DS

Sounds like a cool "big" dog.

Sevin Dust or Eprinex?
Well, I'm almost out of Sevin to dust for the probable mites on my BSL. I don't much like dusting chickens so I'm thinking about switching to Eprinex. But I've never used it and don't know the pros and cons. It sounds like it's easier to apply and lasts longer than Sevin, is that true? What would y'all do?
I use Permetrin II (a small super condensed little bottle) add 3-4 Tablespoons per gallon, and spray everything, even birds, coops, everything.
Directions are on the bottle.
In early spring I buy 4-5 bottles to last me all year...oh I use it on some trees & plants also, but it has a tad of oil in it that can irritate some plants.

As for dust bath, 1/2 sand + 1/2 DE, mixed together and then add 1-2 cans of POULTRY DUST if ya want to...poultry dust is basically DE impregnated with permethrin..........I usually go biv-wackin at night with the red flash light & the squirt bottle of permethrin II, and spray butts all along the roost, works great !
Eprinex is a vermifuge, and I use it in spring & fall...same biv-wack in the night, with eye dropper, Eprinex is squirted on the back of each birds' neck (dig the eye dropper in so the Eprinex goes on their skin.)
Repeat Eprinex application again in 2 weeks.
Hope this helps, this is just how I do "it"...

Thank you all for your input on this! I've been researching more so I can get it into my brain. That takes time. lol
I've had a hard time finding them locally. Farmland and Cenex don't carry them. Dell has Eprinex for $43. Wilco has it for $47, and Permectrin II for $12. And of course tax on top of those. Expensive buggers! And there's enough Eprinex to last the rest of my life!

Where do you guys get this stuff? I found it mail order at ValleyVet .com for less, but it's still around $50 for both.

I tried to sort out the details (below). Did I get it right?

Vermifuge: A new word for me: A less often used word for antihelminthic. It refers to a treatment used to expel parasitic worms from the intestinal tract.

Eprinex: For internal and external parasite control, applied topically. Active ingredient: eprinomectin
7 days of control for mites & lice, 21 days for internal worms
1ml to 22 lb of body weight in cattle
Usually by syringe 0.5cc for large fowl, 0.25cc for bantams
Repeat after 14 days
Cost: about $46 and will last about 25 years!

Permectrin II: Insecticide spray with 30 day residual effect. Active ingredient: 10% Permithrin
0.3 oz. per gallon of water to spray the chickens
1.3 oz. per gallon of water to treat the coop (4x stronger)
Reapply after 14 days
Cost: about $14 for 8 oz. and will last about 3 years.
