Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I have been dealing with mites and lice today too. Luckily, I check my birds regularly so I caught them before it got out if hand. Have to get DE tomorrow but cleaned out the entire coop and sprayed it down, checked and treated the birds. First time having them... thinking it's because it got cold way earlier than expected so I started my deep bedding method early. Since the weather is warming up, lots of moisture in the air and my chickens spending more time in the coop, made a good recipe for mites.

Ugh, 2021 ended in the worst way possible. My mother passed away during surgery (mitral valve replacement) because, at 69.5, no one had ever detected the amount of heart damage she had sustained as a child from Rheumatic Fever (likely such a mild case that they just assumed it was "just strep throat, it's a secondary infection common with strep and scarlet fever...but the surgeon told me it was something that isn't something I would need to worry about as a 41 year old). Valve replacement went extremely, but they had to take it out to reach the damage that was found when they tried taking her off the heart-lung machine. They replaced it 3 times before they finally "gave up" (per her medical directive). Days are slowly getting better, very slow process. I've been going with my daughter to see her therapist once a week...she's still super shy because it's a new therapist, so having me there to "translate" her silence has been helpful.

On to the good news though! My scissor beak, Shadow, was in the nest box today for the FIRST time! No egg yet, but her vent was working hard....maybe this week? The gals are 41 weeks old this week...finally got her nutrition figured out. Her upper beak was really curving and I was researching options on trimming it, but she broke the curved tip off the other day, clean break, very lucky.

I’m very sorry for your loss! My mother died unexpectedly, she went on vacation and never came back. It’s good to hear you are enjoying your chickens!

I’m so sorry about this, :hugs
I hope you and your family find strength in these hard times.

Hi Western Washington friends! When do your hens start to pick up laying again in the spring (with no supplemental light)? I’ve noticed my BOs’ combs are starting to get redder.
We have two that picked it up in the last week. Two more are checking out boxes regularly so I'm thinking in the next two weeks they will be productive members again. Currently getting between 3 and 5 a day now!

Condolences for your loss, losing a parent is difficult.
