Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Welcome to the thread! Do you have chickens?
Yes, I have lots of chickens of many different breeds: 22 hens & 2 roosters. I noticed 2 newly hatched chicks this morning in the hen house. That’s a first for me. 🐣 Fun and exciting, although I don’t need more feathered friends. Anyway, I was hoping there were some hobby chicken keepers in my area, so we could chat and maybe become friends. Possibly even care for each other’s flocks when we leave town. It takes a fellow lover of chickens to know the right thing to do. I live just up the hill from Marshall, it’s a small town about 7 miles south of Spokane, WA.

Welcome to the site, Heather. Hope you find someone in your area to connect with! I'm at the opposite end of the state, SW WA. I know what you mean about having someone to trade chicken duties with . We luckily have found someone who does that as a business here. Until now, we have just been pretty tied to our chickens. I have neighbors who have chickens, but I'm always concerned about Bio Security. So, now I'm just waiting for the bird flu to pass through and perhaps we'll take a trip somewhere.

We get to finish the kitchen project we started.
Moving a fridge we bought back into what is called the cat room.
2x4 studs are being cut today and a upper stud placed.

Hi Valerie,

Yes...I know what you mean about concern over Bio Security and Avian Flu right now. I too am waiting for the migration to pass and hopefully take that horrible disease with it. I read poultry farms are no longer able to sell chicks to local feed stores right now. Fortunately, I am pretty isolated where I live with no ponds to bring in migrating ducks, or geese. It's probably wise to not swap chicken duties with another keeper this year. All it takes is tracking Avian flu in on your shoe to the flock. Yikes! Scary!

Chickens do require a lot of care and tending, so I am tied to my house and worry about them if gone even for 1 night. Anyway, time will tell. Gotta sacrifice for my feathered girls, guys and chicks this summer.

I love the sickle / scythe! Handy in blackberry removal too.

I have some japanese sickles I've been using for years for tight corners and close i spots that a weed wacker just wont do. I use one when harvesting as well. The scythe has been under consideration and thought for a while. One thing is I can cut the grass in the areas where the water is ponded long before I can use the mower. It gets to almost 6 foot before the ground is solid enough.

I use treadle feeders and have 5 gallon buckets with cups for watering. Pens are chainlink so secure. I feel safe leaving them for 3 days. Just have a buildup of eggs when I get back.

The cats get really angry if we're gone longer than that.
