Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I'm getting ready to go out and pick some yellow wax beans while they're still cool, then water the garden. It's 61 degrees now, 40 degrees cooler than it was yesterday afternoon! Feels great! But it's supposed to get up to 97 today, and luckily it's the last day of the heat wave.

Edited to add:
I picked about a pound of wax beans. I'll leave the beans plants in the ground the rest of the season. Might end up with a few dry beans when it's all over.

I saw a female butternut squash blossom that just opened, so I found male blossom and used it to hand pollinate the female. Never tried it before.

Watered the garden, and picked several leaf lettuce plants that were getting out of hand and gave them to the chickens.

I need to get my fall kale and Brussels sprout plants into the ground before they become root bound in the little starter cells.

Very hot here too. We sat out at the chicken run a lot keeping an eye on Cooper and Pippi to make sure war didn't break out. So much cooler there because of the forest and the orchard. I know it's 10 degrees cooler, but felt like a lot more than that.

I could stay inside in the A/C, but I love being outside in the summer. Winter will come and there will be no hanging around outside.

You got that right! I’d rather it be too hot to go out and weed than too cold. :gig

Hey all lost one of the silkie in the heat yesterday.
Have 5 more still.
Headed to town today have meds to pickup at Safeway.
I'm so sorry to hear that Penny Jo. Very sad to lose on of your chickens that way. This is a terrible heat wave for sure.

That's too bad PennyJo. Today's supposed to be a little cooler, and even cooler for the next week.

My pullets are all layers now. My eight pullets put eight eggs in the nest boxes this morning. I think the light colored wonky egg is from the one that was acting weird last night, and it's her first egg.

Awesome! It's great when they all start laying. You'll be selling eggs soon.

I've been watering the silkie pens during the hottest part of the day. The sprinkler literally waters the roof and cools the pens by many degrees. The roof is about 10 feet high which also helps. Greenhouse tarps on the west amd south sides also reduce heat getting in. They are open on the north and east sides in summer.

Courtyard has been getting some much needed water during the the roof cooling which also helps. It's just odd walking into the pens and it very noticeably dropping in temperature.

The silkies are mad they haven't been getting courtyard time except for right before dusk. They stay cooler this way though.
