Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Might be going to run the tiller myself.
They are calling for rain in a few days but night temps are saying were we could plant.
Well, night temps will be up in the 40's starting Thursday. Is that warm enough? Is there too much chance of the temps going back down into the 30's?

I'm probably pushing it, but tomatoes are crying out for the outdoor life.

I'm going to wait at least another 4 or 5 weeks until I put my tomatoes and peppers in the garden. The forecast for next Tuesday morning show a low of 33 degrees, and at my place it's usually colder than the Winlock forecast.

I tried to put my tomatoes in the garden as early as I could the last few years. I fought the weather trying to protect them from cold overnight temps and it was a pain in the butt. With the ground still being cold (below 50 degrees) the plants didn't grow much at all.

What made me decide to starting planting tomatoes near June 1st was the volunteer tomato plant that grew in my garden last year. I think it sprouted out of the ground around June 1, and it grew fast and got big. And it produced tomatoes as well or better than the plants I put into the garden much earlier.

Peppers, I think, like it even hotter than tomatoes. I'll plant my rattlesnake beans and squash around June 1st too. I'm going to spend the day preparing the soil for my row of beans today. I'll post pics later.

My forecast for the next 10 days...

Okay, but see by Thursday is is up in the 40's, like I said. Is that too cold? I think what you're saying is the ground doesn't get warm enough.

I know I'll be planting early in May at the latest.

I got my bean row prepped and ready for planting in 5 or 6 weeks. I mixed in some chicken compost, covered it with a layer of painter's kraft paper, then topped it with around 4 inches of rotted wood chips.

That should trap the moisture in the soil and get the worms working in the dirt. I think the bean seeds with like it.
