Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

As a child I ate nearly the same thing every day as that is what my parents were used to. - some sort of meat panfried in an iron skillet with potatoes and vegetables boiled grey.
Not long ago I was talking to my mother and telling her she shouldn't eat potatoes with green skins as they have toxins in them. She burst out laughing and gave me the "Oh my poor stupid child" look and informed me that she would have been dead 97 years ago if that was true. She is still eating green potatoes at 97 so, I guess green potatoes are not that bad for you.

I just know not to give them to my chickens for some odd reason. Could it be because they are toxic? Nightshade family?

Just curious... how do you do a brooder without a heat lamp? Hmmmm... didn't even think about losing power tonight, even though I knew about the storm. Guess I better leave a light near my bed in hopes that it will wake me if we lose power. Granted... we have one chirpy chick who seems to manage to wake me every night, so I'm guessing he'd set off the alarm if we did lose power.
I use a 10gal storage tub with thin layer of shavings, no food or water(it will be completely dark anyway so they wont eat or drink) and put them in and cover with lid leaving about 2" not covered for ventilation. You have to have at least a few chicks so they can huddle for warmth. This method keeps them warm enough for several hours(we lose power a lot from downed trees). If the power is off for more than 5 hours our jeep has a 120v plug that I can plug the heating pad into and warm it up to put in with them.

Well that was a fun drive. Coming out of Castle Rock toward Longview caught a couple of gust that were near 60mph. Moved my back trailer into the center lane by about a foot. Good thing night driving has fewer auto's on the road.

Solanine is the toxin. We always cut off the green. Great grandma knew it was bad and cut it off. I think I'm the first generation to actually know why. My family grew potatoes as one of the crops they sold, so there was always plenty extra for eating. Always potatoes at every meal except breakfast from September until they ran out around April.

Then it was asparagus for lunch and dinner. Whatever was most abundant and cheapest made up the bulk of the diet.

Potatoes, asparagus, corn, watermelon, cantaloupe, and beef were all raised in large quantities to sell. After the melons quit running was the absolute best time as a kid. Could go down the rows and find the leftover good melons to crack open and eat the hearts out of. Stuff yourself till bursting and not be able to eat the next meal. I used to be able to crack a melon neatly in half on the ground.

Not trying to get back on the topic of guns, but I just wanted to say that I hope I did not come off angry. I value the opinion of every person on here as well as looking up to every one of you for many reasons. I am very limited on the ease off typing as my internet is down and I am doing all of this from my stupid smart phone.
I am very happy that we are able to discuss more than just our poultry as you guys (this is kinda pathetic, I know) are my onl6 friends. See people my age or just any one I meet are intersted in very material things and who has the best or coolest stuff while I am more consentrated on my family. I tried having friends but as soon as the husband camehome the wives threw the kids at them and wanted to run out th door. When my DH is home I am home for the day.
It would drive me crazy that these girls were so concerned with other things that they would let their kids run all over them, then complain that their children were horrible and won't listen while not taking responsibility for how they rasied them.
I am sorry for babbling. I just want ya'll to know that I value each and every one of you here.
I also do belive that there needs to needs to be stricter laws for owning guns, but that our right should not be taken away.
As far as gun safes go we bought ours for about $180ish at Harbor Freight.

1:00am Diane wakes me just to say that she can't breathe because the power is out and her breathing machine won't work. Too bad suck it up. I got week old chicks in the barn. So I go and hook the little generator to run the heat lamp for the babies. Then head over to the stables to get my jump pak and hook up her breathing machine. OK so now Diane was plugged back in and could breath. I set down in the recliner so I can go check on the chicks in a little while. Well 6:14 I woke up when the power came back on I went out to transfer power for the chicks. DANG IT the little generator failed sometime during the night. I knew I should have hooked up the big gen. Will have to wait and see if it had a negative result on the little ones. Ya can't put a price on good times!!!!

CR- I was trying to get a car so I could come out and and help you move your cages, but DH had to take the car to work. I know your probably laughing, silly little girl you would not be able to help! Lol I can just picture you giggling bout it. But that's ok ;o) I get it a lot. Then comes the holy cow look, when I show what I can do.
I just wish I could afford to run all over and help everyone of ya'll with anything ya need done! Hope you find some one to help ya CR.

I feel so helpless. I went out this morning to find no site of my last turkey hen. So I went to were I knew she was working on a clutch. This is what I found.....
400

400

Feathers all around her clutch of 11. One egg was broke, so I brout the other 10 in the house and wiped them off. Had to open one to make sure they are fertile and if they may have been developing. They are fertile, but seems she had not yet begun to sit. Now I will try to incubate them! Dang coyots!!
