Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Stumpfarmer and FarminMomma, sorry about your losses. :(
Dawng, hope your girl is doing better.
CR, I work Saturdays or else I'd be there to help.
Trav and everyone else out driving, be safe on the roads!
HoneysuckleHills, good to see you again. You too, Totalcolour, although I'm sorry about the shoulder.
Renee, congrats on your coop being featured!
I think I got everything...hope all is well with everyone.

Thanks, ma'am.

I'm dealing, I guess- December is a hard month for other reasons, not counting the weather and the feeling of social obligation, but I will persevere and await the return of the sun ((five days until the sun will set later than it does today!).

I'm so sorry! Letting your kids pee all around the chicken area might at least be a stress relief! Sounds like your birds had a terrible night.

Really? That's wonderful news - cause I get seasonal depression pretty bad, and I feel like I'm at the pit of it. That's good to hear that the lighting is going to turn around. Usually by January I'm good to go, but, man, December just does me in every year.

So... after things keep going wrong all day long (youngest DS trying to change the meaning of the "D" in DS while getting ready for school this morning, nearly spinning out on black ice while taking the kids to school while driving my husband's vehicle that I'm not comfortable driving because mine keeps losing power steering, brand new cell phone won't charge, bathroom sink plug mechanism broke while I was cleaning the sink, etc.). Well, I FINALLY got some good news today.

I got the check in the mail for Cocoa and Rocha. Someone paid $12.00 EACH for them! It's not the money that makes me happy - it's believing, since someone paid so much, that they probably have a chance of having gone to a good home. I sure hope so!!! Not knowing where they were going, how they were going to be treated, etc. was the hardest part of letting them go. I have thought about them every single day since Saturday. I will admit, it is also nice to have been sent a check for $15 plus change. That completely covers the cost of the bag of feed they went through while they lived with us.

Now I have hope that my sweet little boys are enjoying life on some farm somewhere.

Hey, I got two eggs again today!

December is full of terrible anniversaries for me, and the darkness and the weather just make it harder to cope.

On the other hand, today felt like "normal" snow, the kind that doesn't stick on the driveway and is gone by the time school is out so nobody can make snowmen.

Renee!!! That's fantastic news about your little roos. I'm glad you got some comforting news about them today after such a rotten day!

I just finished pan searing about 4lbs of thin cut steaks. They are AMAZING!!! I'm so happy we got 1/4 cow now, we are in for some yummy meals over the next few months!!

Quote: Thanks. I appreciate the ideas. I think I may have my 3 DS's go out and pee around the chicken area. Lol, they will get a kick out of that!
Actually FM, female urine is a better deterent for coyotes than males. Something about the hormones in the urine. I kid you not it will help keep it away, unless it is absolutly starving. And I would sit with dark clothing about 20' away from the entry point waiting with a gun to get it. Coyotes around my area are reluctant to come into my yard because of my dog, but they will come right up to the fence.

My my, I'm gone for a few days and there are over 200 posts! You all are a bunch of clucking hens. ;)

Anyway, while walking to downtown Bham I walked past a lovely house with a lovely garden and chicken coop.
I thought I saw a BR in the run the first time I walked by, but on my way home (as it started snowing) all I saw out free ranging were (I think) Welsummers. They all looked super happy! I kind of felt like a creeper checking out the chickens and studying the coop and run design.

I almost took a picture, but I thought that would just cross the line into stalkerdom.

Oh! And you all are totally right about varying personalities within breeds. Most were fairly skittish of me watching them...except for one. She went right up to the fence and started studying me right back. I told her that if this were the wild, she would be the first one eaten. Yes, I occasionally talk to chickens and other animals.

Anyway, if the owner of house and chicken coop is on this thread, that creepy girl with the green raincoat and long brown hair......that was me. Please don't call the cops.

This thread moves VERY fast. Also you can legally take a picture of a house/yard as long as you do it from a public street. If the homeowner asks you to stop taking pictures you have to stop, but you have the right to take the picture. I am an amateur photographer working on my photography degree. I have done a lot of research on legal stuff since I do a lot of HS sport shoots(mostly for my son)

I gave my 4 quarantined hens a dishpan with dust in it and they were so funny to watch.

Halle (Clearly #1) plopped herself down in it and refused to move. Rosie and Cocoa (Fighting to be #2 and #3) were trying desperately to squeeze in beside her. Rosie finally sat down on top of Halle, and Halle let her so that she wouldn't lose her spot. Sad, but still funny.
Our Coturnix quail go absolutely "kids at the water park" when we give them their dishpan dust bath! Constantly singing happy little chirps while they cram into the tub, turn completely upside-down, feet in the air as they wiggle and bathe and wiggle some more! Even more odd they form single-file lines as soon as the pan is full occupancy. Quail done bathing hop out and get back in line for another round, the boys popping and tadataDAHHHH crowing with excitement. We should probably video that. The chickens still mostly just eye the tub suspiciously, except the Sussex who get a good head of steam RUNNING then leap into the bin and wallow, to the disapproving clucks from the Reds and all the bantams.
