Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hi Kim, Hope I'm not messing up the thread by replying so late.  This thread moves so fast and I don't follow it as much as I do my breed threads.  I'm doing well.  Hope you are too.  Yes, I'm still working on my Barnies.  They're doing well.  Truly not trying to brag here but one of my Barnie pullets took BB and Reserve Continental behind one of my Welsummer pullets at the Chehalis show.  That is the 6th show in a row that they've won BB and/or Reserve Continental.

What are you using for your BL Barnie project?  I don't know if you remember but I started a Rosecomb Barnie project a couple years back.  Got one hen now that is very nicely lace but a lousy RC.  Got a cockerel from her this year that has a pretty nice RC and pretty decent lacing.  I'll breed him back to his mom and am hoping that will put me where I want to be - or at least very close.  Then, since I'll already have RC Barnies, I'm gonna cross those with my BLRW's and see if I can get some nice RC BL Barnies.

Sorry, I can't help ya out on the Marans.  I haven't really followed them.  I did get a few BCM gals just so I can cross them with my Ameraucanas and get some more deep olive laying EE's.

It's good to hear from ya.  Been a LONG time.  Here's hoping you had a great Christmas and brought in the new year well.  And here's passing on the very best wishes for a great new year and a terrific hatching season.

I'm running down to Lowe's tomorrow after church for some heavy duty hinges to replace the gates on some breeding pens along with some new lumber for new nesting boxes.  With any luck at all I'll finally have birds in the breeding pens tomorrow after saying for the past 3-4 week that I was gonna do it.  I'm really looking forward to having babies in the house again.  I know, sounds stupid but I miss it.  Now I just gotta find me a good woman who wants to help me take care of 'em!  LOL

Anyways, thanks for the welcoming.  Stay in touch...

God Bless,

Thanks for getting back to me Royce and I am glad you are doing great! I figured since you go to the shows that maybe you would have run across some breeders in your travels. I have found some and they are going to be shipped her from Nashville when her birds start laying again.

Congrats on your bird placings at the shows, that AWESOME!

I used BLRW's to make my first cross with the Blue Laced Barnies. I had some BLRW's that I got from a gal in Florida. Luckily her lines of BLRW's threw single combs. My first and only cross I made before I got out of Barnies, I lucked out and got a single combed, single blue laced pullet. She is a beauty and just considered a pretty token layer. Maybe someday I will get back into the Barnies......I do miss them terribly. They are so friendly.

Good luck with those babies in the house and good luck on your OE project! If you ever need any assistance in the OE program let me know I'd be happy to help in anyway I can. I love Olive eggs..........my gosh I got rid of my OE's to. Man when I downsized.....I downsized. LOL!

Talk soon! Take Care! And THANKS AGAIN!

Quote: If the other girls aren't picking on her she will eventually be ok. Keep Blackie as long as you possibly can. It may take awhile but she will integrate eventually.

It will be ok mom.

The fact that they are still peeping has a lot to do with the fact that they are not welcoming her. I always wait until they sound more like hens than chicks. But if you couldn't then it might just take longer.

ZGOATLADY: I know someone in Pt. Orchard with a trio (I think) of Cream Legbars. I see in your signature that you're looking for some? Would you like her contact information?

WOW! I feel human today! I've now been sick 11 days and haven't left the house in over 2 weeks. Ridiculous. I feel like I've had the life sucked out of me! DH is home again from work today, he's miserable, but at least his is only a cough/cold, not the flu. He went out and got us some alka seltzer cold and cough and it really helped us both! Good thing. I was ready to go on a shoothing spree through the NyQuil factory since that junk doesn't work for anything!!! We *always* buy it, only to realize how it does NOTHING for us when we're sick. Gah! Lesson learned: buy Alka Seltzer from now on.

I'm realizing how nice it was to have a poop shelf to scoop, now that it's been removed and we changed things around in there. There's a LOT of poop on the floor of the coop now; gonna have to change the litter quite frequently. Boo. At least I got to keep all my girls though! They're so happy with their new lower roosts. Plenty of room for all of them, with room for a few more!

I'm in the market for a bigger feeder. Does anyone close to me have one you're not using? I'm currently using an 11lb plastic feeder but I like the look of the galvanized ones more. Thinking 40lbs would be a good size for my dozen. That would put me filling it completely with a bag of Nutrena (a whole bag!) every 2 weeks or so. Is that way too long for food to sit in the feeder, or as long as it's covered will it be OK? Guess I could get the 30lb feeder instead. WDYT?

Ooooh yum...both quail and squab are very tasty birds! :drool
I'm curious, where you get your pigeons? I'd love to try a pigeon pie somewhen.

We went to the Chehalis bird auction last weekend - sometimes get pigeons very cheap there. We bought 8, and 15 quail. I see so many people pass them up - they don't know what they are missing! I guess you do;)

Oh yes...may have to see about getting some auction birds to try.

The pigeons were selling for a dollar each last weekend at the auction in Enumclaw.

Yes, but the Enumclaw auction is pretty bad - they take the bird out of the box, hold it up for a few seconds and then pop it back in the box. You can't take a good look at it. Never know if you are getting a sick bird. At Yard Birds (and Cole Creek) they are in wire cages and you can walk around and get a really good look at them.
