Russ- It's a radio ad
Well, that makes more sense. I was waiting for a video to start while listening to the add. Hahaha

nay snay, nay snay. repeat after me. nay snay, nay snay.

I got home 15 min ago and the temp was down to 32 but no precipitation.
After 5 months of not being able to get my car in the garage, tonite was the nite.
woot.gif

1 very large garage sale, 5 trips to the dump and the garage is just now looking as if you actually wallk around in it.
I still have a dump run or three todo. Not all from the garage. Me and the wife had become packrats and I was on the verge of being a hoarder.

My white car has a lot of greenish gunk on it. It will take a major effort to clean it all up.

LOL, my Blue Roo has intergrated with the flock, has several favs, but at roost time, he goes to his batchlor qtrs. One smart Roo. LOL
Egg production is ok considering the time of year I guess. The hens seem calmer with the Roo then without his presence and he's not a fully matured bird, but he is getting large.
Nothing else from out here in Rochester.

CR, you used to have goats, right? I'm trying to do as much research as possible before I get any and would like to hear from real people and you seem to tell it like it is. May I ask you about them? Anyone else with experience, please pipe up as well!
Likes/dislikes???
Did you have meat, dairy or fiber goats?
What would you do different if you started over?
I have 2.33 acres, but we have about 3/4 of an acre in yard. The field consists of mostly rye grass and weeds. There is some brush in the main area I would keep them, which is contained with a 4ft non-climb mesh fence. I'm reading as much as I can find and plan to talk to our extension office about mineral supplement, etc., but I'd appreciate as many opinions as possible.

Forgive me for going off topic on here (I know there are other livestock forums), but after being on this forum for awhile I value the opinions of the people here!
We had pygmy GOATS. Little money pits. They ate dollar bills and pooped goat berries!!!

Question for those of you who do not slaughter your own birds. (neither of us want to do it) How do you go about doing it? Where do you take your chickens to and how much does it cost? How do the chickens come from the butcher? Is it cost effective to do it and at what number of birds does it make sense? Does it make sense to run like 50 ? birds for how ? long in an fenced run over our septic field (really the only cleared area of our property)?
I take mine to auction and. Normally what I get for one bird I can take to Grocery and buy 2 birds
that are ready to go to cook.

I totally understand your frustration. The dog that grabbed Rhodie was a bird dog (lab) and the owner insisted that their dog was just a pet and wasn't trained to hunt so he wouldn't have gone after my bird. The dog was in my back yard and I saw Rhodie in it's mouth. Oh boy, that was a "fun" discussion that DH ended up having to come mediate. It turned out OK, and those were some difficult days, but relationships are finally being mended.

Another neighbor has a cat that has been in my yard and stalking my chickens. The big girls are pretty good about chasing it off, but I do worry about Latte. Gun use is not allowed, although I have been mad enough to threaten pulling out the BB gun. DH has talked about getting a pellet gun. I don't know. The owners gave me permission to spray it with the hose - yeah, like I'm going to have time to run over and turn on the hose if my chickens being attacked.
Me, I would go the paintball marker route. Hurts like the dickens, leaves paint so the owner knows it has been in trouble, and is non-leathal. Don't get one from a sports store though, go to a paintball shop. Tell them your situation, they should not try and up-sell you. And they can set the velocity so it is effective. The markers out of the baox are usually factory set too fast and thus causes LOTS of paintballs to break in the barrel(mess to clean) and at too high a velocity, accuracy goes WAY down.

This dog already killed all but one of the owners chickens so I rustled that one. This dog should have been dealt with then.

FYI Paintball MARKERS are not regulated. you could use paintball to deter the cat. OR put the paint balls in the freezer. a well placed shot and problem solved !! DO NOT PLAY paint ball with frozen paint !!!!!
Paintballs won't freeze unless you put them in liquid CO2 or colder. The fish oils inside the balls keep them from freezing for just that purpose. I have been playing for over 12 years and a good friend owns a local paintball shop. If you can get a ball to freeze it will expand too much and not go through the barrel.
True they won't freeze solid but will get thick and hurt really bad. Also on most fields 300 fps is MAX. my marker I am hard pressed to get down to 300. yes I have a chrono and use it.
So, Himself's brother came to visit - and brought a little gift. I am the lucky recipient of Tuna, Wahoo, Prawns, Antelope, and elk!
You are close enough I could make a road tri[p. Be careful of what you are bragging !!! lol

I do need to say that running around in the dark and trying to explain to the new girls, and some younger girls, that there is a perfectly good coop, with all the other hens in it, makes me a very happy girl. Plus I am fairly sure that it upsets the girls.

I'm still trying to get some of the younger girls to understand the whole concept.

Lovely EE and adorable puppy! I'm researching dogs lately too; sometime in the next 2 years I think we'll get a puppy. Thinking Christmas 2013, which gives me many many months to get things situated for having a dog. I also need something that will take to training easily and leave my chickens alone. Can't wait to decide on a breed and find us a dog! I also want a dog that is big and a guard dog.
I'll be interested in finding out what breed you choose! We were going to wait til we have more property in a couple years, but she just fell into place and fit in so well, we couldn't say no...but we'll still be wanting a guardian dog down the road, and she loves other dogs so a buddy would be nice someday.
Quote: This girl hasn't laid for me yet (she's around 8 months old, I'm thinking winter has made her a late bloomer), so I really don't know what to expect from her eggs. Her beard has been black since we bought her a few months ago. A color-changing beard that indicates laying would be really cool!

I think my chickens murdered something/someone today. I picked up eggs in the early afternoon and found that three of them had blood spatters. One of the Wyandottes was just finishing laying and her egg was clean. I picked up the other Wyandotte's egg later and noticed that it had blood spatters too. Mom and I went out to inspect everyone and found nothing abnormal going on with anyone's vent, but then we noticed that the ladder area where Pudge and Pengin roost was covered with blood. Actually covered. We inspected feet and only found a little Bumblefoot on the Duck and George. We found more blood on the rest of the ladder, quite a lot on the long perch and some on the opposite ladder. There was a large spot of gore on the wall. There was some blood on the other side of the house too, but not quite as much. There was a tiny bit on their nest shelf. Looked around, didn't see bloody poos or anything. Didn't find any injuries on anyone. We think they got a mouse and were fighting over it. I have such nice girls, yes I do...
What good girls! I'm glad it was just a tasty meal and no one was hurt!
