Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Mmmm....I miss French Toast! I haven't had it since we went GF/DF/SF. There's NO GF bread worth making into French Toast, and I don't like any of the alternative types of milk, so yeah...kinda bummed about that.

I'm a bit disappointed with my coop setup now. I'm getting ammonia. My girls don't EVER stir up the litter. Maybe I need to give it one last chance without the waterer in there. I think it leaked majorly because I can't see how the litter is so wet unless the waterer leaked. Guess I'm in for another full coop cleanout. I still need to get roofing materials onto the next box and somehow rain-proof the hinge lid; when it pours I get water in the nest boxes a little bit. *sigh* so much I need to do, so little help from DH :( Boo
In the winter time, I don't clean out my coop floor, only the poo boards. One thing I found that helps stir up the litter is alfalfa. I noticed on dark rainy days, my chickens tend to stay in their coop, only venturing into their covered run for water, or to run out the door, across the lawn and to my patio door where all 24 will cram themselves onto the door matt under the eaves where they all poop :(

I buy a big bale of alfalfa and tear off big chunks that I spread in the coop and run. Whenever there is a fresh chunk of alfalafa down, they all scratch around hoping to find some yummies. By the time spring comes around, the coop floor is deep with alfalfa and wood shavings. Today I cut open another big pumpkin that I have been storing in the garage. I used some of it to make soup, then baked the rest and put it in the food proccessor with some mushy bananas and the pumpkin seeds to make a treat for the chickens. Tomorrow they get wilted apples.

Soon, we will be moving our chicken coop. Right now its a 16x16 and is between 7 and 6 feet tall. We will be building a new one over by our long barn closer to my tack/grain room. I'm wanting it to be a 48x16 seperated down the middle to make it two 24x16s. Having the coop/run closer to the tack/grain room also means it will be closer to power and water. We are expanding our shop this summer so the coop will have to be redone in another spot. I'm hoping to get some runner ducks this spring and that is why I want the coop seperated so they can have their own space and get use to the chickens thru the fence before I start turning them out during the day.
Sounds like a nice set-up! How many chickens will you have?

When I started the 6 chicks on it 5 days ago, they were eating 2 cups of it a day, now they are down to a little over 1 cup a day. I love the conversion rate. And they are like a shark feeding frenzy when I put a full bowl in. The big kids are starting to eat more of it, especially when their dry food runs out. They are getting 2 large dog food bowls a day(about 5-6 cups worth for 9 birds)
Travis, I just got to thinking... I don't know how to calc the TOTAL of what they're eating because the fermented feed is just wet moosh. As an example, lets' say that last month they ate 8 oz of pellets per day and now they eat 4 oz of pellets plus a bowl of fermented feed. Are they eating more now, TOTAL, or less? No way to know since I don't know how much of the layer pellets are in the moosh. Suggestions????

Well after a long day we got T Hi all moved. It was a long day. I left home at 7:30 am and got home about 10:00 pm. I am really feeling it this morning. Now waiting for pettec to get here this morning. They came over yesterday but since they got a delayed start and had some issues along the way they had to overnight. They are dropping some things here then we are gonna go enjoy breakfast up at the little cafe. Been a busy couple days but hey any days I get to spend with "chicken buddies" are good days.

Stay warm peeps I have 16* here. about 4 it looked like it may drop lower but not yet.

Well now even the darn in-coop water is freezing!! Apparently about 25 degrees is the point where the indoor water freezes too. So I was out there with a pitcher of hot water at 7am and try spent the whole time I was outside yelling at me to hurry up. Then half of them got impatient and went to the creek. I don't know I I like them drinking from the creek, I don't know what contaminants are in it! They haven't been having very solid poops since they found the creek...probably not getting as much AVC in them to keep it nice and firm. Blech.

CR- glad you could go help t-hi move, wish I could but with no can, or having to bring 3 littles, I wouldn't be very helpful :(

I'm no expert with a computer so if anyone else has info maybe they will offer some advice. OK.... you asked....

Mikey, all versions of Java are at risk.
OT; java... ok, from what I see on the various web sites this is affecting only java 7. Sorry... it affects ALL versions of Java. Some articles only discuss ver. 7, but it's misleading.

There has been talk that java was going to update java 6 to java 7. Java 7 is already out and has been for some time. I'm on ver. 7 update 10.

I checked this computer and I'm still running java 6. I declined the offer to update and will do so until they get a fix in place. It's easier to control Java with Version 7, such as setting the security sensitivity higher or lower, or to temporarily disable it rather than totally uninstalling it.

This is the Java control panel in ver. 7 (click to enlarge)

ADVICE: Update to version 7 and disable for now. Or, if you don't want to update yet, Uninstall it!
They have estimated there will be an update on Tues. with over 80 fixes included.

FWJ- I have been bringing waters into my shed and everything was fine until last night. Mine froze inside my shed last night. Might be bringing them into the garage tonight. :)

Also make sure the roosts/houses where they sleep are higher than the nest boxes.

Right now, I just have four 6gal buckets that we use for our nest buckets. My main chicken house is 6x8ft and I have two roost poles that all but one chicken sleeps on. I would like my chickens to lay in this house because this is the only house with the red heat lamp so they would feel more comfortable and warm. My other house is simply a homemade dog house (for a lab) with a lid for a roof and right now I have one hen sleeping in there and most of my babies. This hen hasn't weaned her babies but also welcomes the other babies as well. I am getting eggs in there as well as the main house but I'm getting hen eggs as well as pullet eggs in both spots. If I move the other three nest buckets into the main house and put dummy eggs in there, will my hens hopefully start using them? There current setup is temporary as we are going to build a bigger, better one this spring.

Right now we have one rooster (Whiski), six hens (Momma Hen, Eenie meenie minie, Moe, and Little Hen), three cockerals (Evil, Rum, and Royal), three pullets laying (Angel, Babe, and Blondie) and 20 babies. All of my babies and young chickens came from Whiski and my hens. Whiski is what I believe to be a Splashed Laced Wyandotte and my 6 hens are Black Sex Links. The pullets, cockerels, and babies are all a cross between the two. Very vibrent color combos.

I've posted about this gizmo on the https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...keeping-thread-ots-welcome/3610#post_10265558

It's called a Thermo Cube. I bought mine for $13 at Home Depot. On the same city street in Oak Harbor I found them at Cenex and a pet store for $23 and $18 at Ace hardware.

I put one in my barn and plugged a light into it to come on in my Silkie breeding pen. It turns on at 35 degrees and off at 43 or so. I feed FF and have a pop bottle waterer hanging in that pen and this gizmo goes on in time to prevent them from freezing. It has two outlets. Works like a charm.
