In the winter time, I don't clean out my coop floor, only the poo boards. One thing I found that helps stir up the litter is alfalfa. I noticed on dark rainy days, my chickens tend to stay in their coop, only venturing into their covered run for water, or to run out the door, across the lawn and to my patio door where all 24 will cram themselves onto the door matt under the eaves where they all poopMmmm....I miss French Toast! I haven't had it since we went GF/DF/SF. There's NO GF bread worth making into French Toast, and I don't like any of the alternative types of milk, so yeah...kinda bummed about that.
I'm a bit disappointed with my coop setup now. I'm getting ammonia. My girls don't EVER stir up the litter. Maybe I need to give it one last chance without the waterer in there. I think it leaked majorly because I can't see how the litter is so wet unless the waterer leaked. Guess I'm in for another full coop cleanout. I still need to get roofing materials onto the next box and somehow rain-proof the hinge lid; when it pours I get water in the nest boxes a little bit. *sigh* so much I need to do, so little help from DHBoo

I buy a big bale of alfalfa and tear off big chunks that I spread in the coop and run. Whenever there is a fresh chunk of alfalafa down, they all scratch around hoping to find some yummies. By the time spring comes around, the coop floor is deep with alfalfa and wood shavings. Today I cut open another big pumpkin that I have been storing in the garage. I used some of it to make soup, then baked the rest and put it in the food proccessor with some mushy bananas and the pumpkin seeds to make a treat for the chickens. Tomorrow they get wilted apples.
