I'm SO worried about my chickens while we're gone though. We don't have a heated waterer and unless I leave the run door open the whole time we're gone and give them free rein of the yard and creek (also leaving them completely vulnerable to a predator overnight), then they won't have liquid water the entire 2nd day we're gone. That's NOT OK. Don't know what to do but I really think I'm gonna have to leave the run open for them all.

Woo excited, 4 of 6 of the eggs i took from my mom are developing nicely. My moms is currently getting 4 large eggs a day plus 3 pullet eggs. I wont bother trying to hatch pullet eggs though. but am confused as she only has 2 pullets now that they can find. One must be hiding somewhere in a tree or the brush outside of the pen and coming back to lay eggs which is totally backwords from any chicken i've ever known LOL

Also, any muscovy owners here? When do they typically being laying eggs? and how can i tell for sure if my ducks are female? I have one male and supposed to have 2 young females. But well I've never owned muscovies before. The one male is huge, then there is a female that is tiny and the white one is between the two sizes. I have seen the male mate it but i know that male animals aren't exactly picky about if they are mating a female or another male.

Chickie Lady -you're grousing about double digit temps, it was 1.2 degrees when I woke up, and because it is sunny it was jumped to 9 degrees 4 hours later. Now I DO need to wear gloves and finding my face mask would be a good idea too.

Looks like you found yer hat though !
You could always stuff a hot water bottle under such a hat & therefore avoid brain freeze.

My last winter in North Idaho was -30 in winter (January) that being quite enough for me (I MOVED)
