Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Okay WA folks, I live in Tacoma, WA and got my chicks in September, they still haven't laid their first egg yet. Anyone else in the same boat?

What I think is hilarious is that Mom uses every type of electric saw without issue, but she's afraid of the Dremel.

That's funny. The Dremel is the first tool we started teaching our kids to use (with sanding discs). I wouldn't let them use a cutting blade on it though. They can be dangerous! Me and a few leather gloves know from experience!

My oldest nicked his finger with a sanding disc when he was nine - that kid TOTALLY respects that tool now. He's very careful with it. They're not allowed to use it unless what they are sanding is secured in vice, too.

I have two that were born in May that aren't laying yet, a Jersey Giant and a Buff Orpington. I *think* the Buff Orp started to lay this week, but I haven't seen her on the nest, so I'm not sure. I found one very light brown egg with tiny hard dots all over it, like extra shell was deposited in spots all over. Today I found one the same color. I don't think I have another light brown egg layer.

I also have an Araucana and Black Copper Marans from June that aren't laying yet. A Rhode Island Red and black sex link of the same age are laying and have been for almost 2 months.

Different breeds lay at different ages--what do you have?

I'm sure many of you do gardens. When do you start your seeds in the house or in a green house? Last year I waited til march to start my tomatos and peppers and ended up with them not getting big enough to produce much at all. So today I just tossed the seeds in some containers with dirt in a bedroom in the window. same with my peppers and some bird seed (corn) just to see if it's possible that it would sprout. If the bird seed sprouts i'll buy more to plan becuase it was WAY cheaper then buying seeds meant for planting.

Any suggestions for when to plant what type of plants in pots is welcomed. I use to be great at predicting when to plant these things but i have lost the touch the past few years. It really sucks, Now that I have unlimited water i cannot get anything to grow. Last year slugs ate my garden. This year I have ducks! I am trying to grow an organic garden. A small organic garden.
Most of my garden space is near the sidewalk and what did make last year walked off when I wasn't home :( I had bush beans out there, every time I was ready to pick them i'd go out and they were wiped clean. I know it was people not animals because they would wait til the beans were very large before taking.

Gardening is supposed to be a labor of love. It's supposed to be relaxing. My therapist suggested it for my anxiety disorder. It has been so stressful for me each year (this will be my 4th year i believe). Year before last the city came and dug up my garden saying the dirt was poison and never replaced the plants. last year slugs and neighbors got my garden. Hoping for some luck this year.

Some things, like Broccoli or Cauliflower need to be started now or by next month. I usually start my tomatoes and peppers early. I have never had success getting fully formed Cauliflower heads, so I'm done trying. Broccoli has been hit and miss - some have done very well, but I don't like the taste of the variety. I'm not sure if I'm growing Broccoli this year or not. My best year for tomatoes I started in Feb. But, be forewarned - they must be raised indoors until it is warm enough for them to go outside. That year I had 3 foot tall tomato plants growing in my kitchen. I was SO happy to move them outside. I got more tomatoes than I could eat that year. They were indeterminate tomato plants and they grew up to the gutters on my single story house. If you want lots and lots of tomatoes, grow indeterminate. My neighbor used to joke with my that my back yard looked like a jungle.

It's actually 80lb sheet foam. I have an uncle who works for GP in Tacoma and this was some "oops" material for a plane. It is great to work with, it cuts like butter and is an 1" thick so the girls will be well insulated. The inside was sealed with tinted sealer/primer and the outside is currently getting a coat of Venetian plaster, and we'll seal that too! The roofs (roves?) are also made out of this material and are planned to get a gold/copper car-enamel. :0D
