I think it would be pretty funny if Cocoa and Rocha were girls, because they definitely trump Blackie in the chicken order. I'm pretty positive Blackie is a lil roo. But then, what do I know. I've been positive Cocoa and Rocha were lil roos from the day they were born because they've always had such a large combs on their heads. They hatched with little pointy combs. Gosh - that would be so cool if they were girls. We really adore them. They both have a lot of personality.

I hate to admit it - but they have a lot more personality and are more fun to watch than Latte - even though Latte has been my little chick from day one (well my oldest son thinks Latte is his - but I say Latte is mine - we've had to agree to disagree on that matter). Latte is so meek and mild mannered, but Cocoa and Rocha are always stirring up something.

Blackie on the other hand is one flighty little chick. If he turns out to be a girl, he'll be my new exercise program trying to chase him down. He didn't have a mama to teach him to fly, but he flies higher than Caunnie or Drama can, and he's very fast! We've been trying to free-range them in with the big girls for a few minutes each day and Blackie keeps me running to catch him to get him back into the brooder.

Don't stop!  More... more... more. Well, just saying I have a keen interest in BA's so love to hear stories about them. It amazes me how many people tell me how sweet their BA's are but don't take stuff from their other birds. Interesting dichotomy. I cannot wait to have some!     ~Dee~

Mine is always the first to come greet me and has a great personality. She keeps peace in my mixed layer flock, without being a brute.

Pudge is the chubby-faced penguin baby (right). Pengin is standing next to her. I will try to keep quiet once again.

Hello, New to forum and found the WA thread. Am in Poulsbo, Kitsap, WA. Am new to chicken keeping since June when I got 4 EE chicks to go with the 3 yr old RIR hen I inherited from the last renter of our place. No more renters! I am really enjoying the whole experience. Hooked I guess.

I'm sorry! I hope you find the house of your dreams soon! Who knows - something better may come available.

We lost a house a few years ago when we were more able to move (our current house's value hadn't crashed yet). We were the first to put an offer in on a beautiful house with a large lot. The next day I got a call from a mortgage company asking us to fill out papers with them for the house. We told them no, we were using our Credit Union. I was ticked when I found out the house went to someone else who offered the exact same amount we did, after we did - but they agreed to use their mortgage company. The mortgage company was owned by the listing agent's spouse. Our Real Estate agent told us that was illegal and this particular couple had hundreds of fines and cases in litigation against them, but they just keep on doing what they do because they make so much money operating illegally that they can pay the fines. Every time I drive by that house I get a sick feeling in my stomach. I understand the frustration of losing a house that you really want. I had mentally moved into that thing - knew where every piece of furniture was going. I had even drawn up sketches of the room layouts for things.

Man, this makes me sick just reading it!!! I can only imagine going thru it! People can be so infuriating!!!!!

Thanks, that's very helpful. How long did these birds live, or did you cull them at some point?

I ended up selling them when some people came to buy some chicks and then asked to buy them too! I wanted to make room to try some other breeds.

I agree, there is nothing like doing the work they were bred for to keep dogs fulfilled.

So, the extra roos are on Craigslist! They need to go as they are getting too rough with my ladies. Currently I have a ratio of 1:1 hens vs. roos. If I can find a large enough pot for scalding without breaking the bank I may try to do 'em in myself. There is a lady who is a USDA certified processor, but I'd rather not spend more money on them. They are costing too much in feed!!!

Can anyone confirm the sex of these two birds? I've learned to wear gloves with these birds - Blackie has very sharp claws and has ripped my finger twice. Ouch!

Rocha... (Cocoa looks almost exactly the same - just more feathering on the feet)





This is the confusing part about Cocoa and Rocha - they don't have pointy feathers like we saw on the roos at the show... sorry about the blurry picture:



And this is little Latte. Not a yellow chick any more. Can you tell by seeing how little she is compared to me - and how big Rocha is compared to me how much smaller Latte is? S/he's tiny compared to the other three.





Any pullets in these photos?

I'll post pics of Cocoa and Blackie later. I want to try and get Blackie's photos in good light - he's so pretty - he's black with brown mixed in, but his lower feathers are turning a deep shiny greenish color.

I am going to say Latte is definitely a pullet. Rocha has nothing really that screams cockerel to me, another week or two and should be sure. Yes post pics of Cocoa and Blackie. My 2 EE girls(11 weeks) attack each other like hawks, they are trying to figure out who is gonna be #2 in their sub-flock. Amber(GSL) is soooo #1, I think when she is big enough she may just be very high or top of order for whole flock. She already jumps in with the big girls for raisins. The EE's wont come near the big girls.

I would really give then a couple more weeks to be sure. If those combs seem to get redder overnight then I would worry. But you can convince yourself of one or the other so easily during the early weeks. It messes with your head, believe me, I have been there!

This is our Turkey, that use to attack me, after I was done with him. He is in a 2.5 gallon tub. Man was he tastey.
