Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

My girls love to "help" in the yard so much. As I rake leaves, they follow me and re-distribute them. They will get in the way of my rake so that I have to stop and wait for them to move. I had too many "helpers" when I was trying to plant the last of my mom's irises the other day. They would pretend that they were not watching me. They would casually advance and start trying to scratch around the bulbs I'd just planted and moved on from. I need to start carrying a spray bottle around with me so that I can take care of my pest problem when I'm made to do garden activities.

Oh, more to look forward to! LOL Looks like I'll be using the big roll of welded wire fencing I've had socked away in my shed. I'll have to see if it is better used on the flower beds or just on the chickens. My girls in the pen are really itching to get out, even in the rainy weather. I had to pick two of them up and put them back in because shutting the door on their toes just wasn't making my point. I can't really blame them, the pen is disgusting! It's so wet, the French drain was backed up under 4" of water. As soon as the coop is in place and I can remove the brooder from the pen, I'm going to scoop out the top couple inches of pea gravel and replace it.

I had a helper in the garage tonight, too. I think she approves of the coop!

She sat up there the whole time I was painting the egg box wall inside the coop. The silkie just stood around on the floor next to her. I like how easily they get used to me. The Polish has now wandered all over the inside of the garage, and she keeps choosing to stay by my side.

Hmm, I really need to come up with a name for her....

Paint is done on the frame and egg box wall. Also finished painting the floor of the cabinet and the underside of the coop floor (which will have vinyl on top). I started painting the inside walls of the sheathing, but I ran out of white paint and didn't have time to paint the ones that need grey. Oh well, Lamont can start building the roof while I am painting. There is plenty more to be done, and it needs to be finished in a week!

In sad news today, I had to euthanize the silkie chick with wry neck. She was losing weight, and still severely affected with head wobbles. She kept walking backwards and would end up on her toes in a corner of her box with her head on the ground. I had to put her water bowl along a wall after she nearly drowned in it (it's a tiny sauce dish, but she somehow soaked her whole head in it). She's not suffering anymore, and none of the others are showing any problems, other than dirty rumps that need bathing.

I'm so sorry.

Hurts, but you did the right thing.

I like silkies but the sight of a rooster with his jumbo comb makes me want to retch. At least a hen usually has enough fluff to hide it but, the boys - oh, gag me with a spoon! The combs are just hideous, I always think they should be rushed to surgery to have them removed. Where did walnut combs originate? I don't know of any other breed that has them. But I can't believe a breed standard would require them. Such a beautiful bird but the combs are like a jumbo gorilla in the room. You can't stop staring at them but, you hope they don't come near you.

Silkie people please don't hate me - while others are confessing their feelings about silkies- the only thing I don't like about them is their combs. Am I the only one who feels this way about their walnut combs?
Actually, as much as I love them, that is my least favorite thing about them. But having them around now, I find that I don't notice it as much. I guess I have been desensitized now.
I think everyone shoud get to have their opinion on what birds they like or don't like. There are a few that I don't like that some on here swear by. My experiences have been different. I all good!

I am sorry Jen! I hate it when we have to make those decisions. It's sad, but neccessary.
