Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I'm going to ask here first. I have four 14 week old EE cockerels that are turning into real jerks. Anyone want a few for chicken dinner? They are 1/4 silkie but only one of them has black skin.

Their half silkie, half EE rooster father needs a home or a pot as well. He's not aggressive to people. He does get little too amorous with the girls maybe. He doesn't like to be caught and picked up, but will come take treats from me and give them out to the girls.

I just separated them all out yesterday. The young boys have to go soon. With my back lately, I just don't really feel like processing anything right now.

Should an araucana, black sex link, rhode island red, and black copper marans (all around 5 months old) get along with my current four? (White Leghorn, red sex link, jersey giant, buff orpington, all less than a year old)

I am limited to four more (8 total) so I'm really trying to choose carefully and I want to get them all from the same source to make quarantine easier. I found someone who has these four.

This would cover everything that I want except for an olive egg layer, but I can live without that for now. I could maybe get rid of one brown layer later and replace it with an olive layer.

RIR are supposed to be good layers, right? Are black sex links as good layers as red sex links?

Black sexlinks are great layers. My George is very dependable. I haven't had any Red sexlinks (I have a golden) but I don't know if there's much difference in production between all of the sexlink varieties.

I think everyone shoud get to have their opinion on what birds they like or don't like. There are a few that I don't like that some on here swear by. My experiences have been different. I all good!
Wise words, KMHunter! Life would be pretty boring if everyone and everything was the same.

You might not want to hear this, but.... bringing in just one bird is hard on the bird and as a result on the owner. I've done that twice now and I want to avoid it in the future. It's easier if they have a buddy to pal around with rather than the sole recipient of all the abuse from the whole flock. You might think about getting just 3 birds now, then later get rid of one brown layer and bring in two new birds, i.e. an olive egger and one other. One other advantage may be that you'll have different age birds which can help in the egg laying department.

I really like my BSL, she's very friendly and a very reliable layer. There are several breeds that are crossed to create each of the different color sex links so not all BSL will have the same qualities, not all RSL will have the same qualities, etc. It's a bit of a grab bag, but if you know the breeder they may give you some insights to the ones they breed.

If you don't mind me asking, which breeder are you planning to get them from?

Quote: Try giving treats in a containers that make a sound like bird seed.
Shake your container get them use to that sound means treats.
Then when you want them to go in use that method outside yelling treats shaking your container.

If it is a real nice sunny day and they are full or dust bathing you might not get all of them to follow you into run.

It works 90% of the time for me though and much better then chasing them around your yard unless you training to be in a Rocky movie!

Hello all! I'm a major newbie! I have recently (Saturday) acquired my first batch of 5 chicks, 2 Buff Orpingtons, and 3 Barred Rocks I'm so excited!!! Then Sunday I was given 6 BA's, but Monday am I woke up and two were dead. :-( I kinda freaked out... Now my babies are spoiled rotten and my daughter, the dog, and, probably, the rabbits are planning a "coupe de coop" for my attention, I think.

I am going to have to go through 522 pages of posts later... in the meantime:

Is anyone hosting a Chicken Coop Tour this year? I absolutely love seeing pics of peoples coops on here, BYC is my latest addiction, but I'd love to chat with some other chick-parents to learn more. I'm on info overload.

Any suggestions on the best places to buy chick supplies, feed, etc?

Has anyone found Oxine in a store? I need some more, but I can't justify spending $32 for 1 gallon, when I can get them for $27 (4+). Does anyone else need any, and want to split?!

When does Tacoma consider chickens to be "adult"?

What is the first thing I should know as a new chicken owner? I found out today that my chicky's are smart! =)

Thanks Greg for the advice. I am sure that is more appealing than the big stick I was waving around. LOL

My girls first step outside their pen.

They found the dirt under the porch and I had a hard time getting them to leave. It looked like a dust storm coming out from under there. Funny as heck. Life is good.

My Production RIR's lay every 25 hrs(yes I charted it) and take a day to reset every 8-9 days. Honestly since you have a RSL, I woulnd opt not to get a BSL or the RIR and get the Olive Egger instead. Also note that RIR's tend to have aggression issues. Of my 2, one is sweet as can be, the other torments the new pullets(only thing saving her from the freezer is her eggs)
