Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

If you feed them back to the hens, make sure they are small pieces and do not resemble an egg at all. You could end up with egg eaters then. I put mine in a plastic bag and just mash them up.

I let mine dry and break them up small enough for the birds to swallow. If I miss some, they break them up just fine. During the summer the girls have to deal with only oystershell since I put the egg shells in the garden for the plants.

I let my shells dry then crush them and feed them back to the birds. If I'm in a hurry to dry them I put them in the microwave for 30 seconds. I alternate oyster shells and egg shells. I learned it from my mother and her mother before her... So we've been doing it for about 135 years! LoL

No room for a tree at our house, either. Well - at least no large trees

Here is our tree this year!

We got one of those when my daughter was about 7. DH told her that was gonna be our only tree and she got soooo mad and almost started to cry!!! She was quite relieved to find we were joking!!! I know, horrible parents aren't we?

I'm still trying to figure that out; I was thinking about it while I was charging around outside, but I've got to have a snack and think on it further before I do anything. If I didn't think my husband would through a noisy fit, I'd put her in the 10 gallon aquarium and put that in our bathroom, where it's nicely warm, but I am so not armed for that snit fit right now.
So far today I rebuilt the hay table, staked the sheep out for a while, fed everything, moved the sheep pen, watered everything, put down bedding in everyone's pen, filled the EE's seed feeder with safflower seeds, helped the hired hand unload a new bale of hay, a sack of the wrong kind of layer feed (Del's instead of Layena: paper sacks do not work with my storage system) a sack of alfalfa pellets and two sacks of wood pellets, put the sheep back in his pen, overcooked the sweet-potatoes for the rest of the chickens (darn) and cleaned up two puddles of old-dog urine. OH- and shut the last pasture gate to the orchard and bungee corded it good and firm, and did it without having a random cow on the wrong side of the fence. Hooray!
Oh- and washed two loads of Franklin's shirts.
And somehow run a hay-sliver through a pear of rubber gloves and into the end of my pinky finger, which is not fun.
You sure are one busy lady!!! There's no way I'd be able to keep up with all that!!!

Thanks all for identifying her for sure. I just pealed some of her hard boiled eggs and they where the most beautiful blue inside. Much brighter than on the outside.

What do you guys do with all your egg shells? I had a girlfriend years ago that would keep them in a spare pan in the oven and cooked them whenever she turned on the oven and then put them with her roses. Should I feed these back to my hens?
Yep! I rinse mine right after I use them and stash them in a baggy under the sink until I get enough to deal with. Then I bake on low heat for about 15-20min and break them up a little and then put them in my coffee grinder. That chops them very small. They do make good fertilizer. I used some of them mixed with bone meal for my tomatoes and never had bottom rot problems like I did the year before.

I am hoping to go, but I might be busy assembling a coop!

Lamont thinks it might be ready to put together in the back yard as early as Saturday. I have a 12X12 pop up canopy I can set up to keep us dry while we nail the sheathing on and make last-minute cuts. He will add the trim after it's set up and has chickens inside. So my chicks might be in their home by Sunday night!

What time is everyone going? If I'm not busy at that time, I do need to pick up some more chick starter. I guess I'm going to have to just feed them all start plus oyster shell. When do they usually switch, is it 15-16 weeks?

Who is going to be at Bothell feed center on Saturday? :D  And when?

I plan to be there, my schedule is flexible. :)

I reallly want to come! I need to know what time though, so I can plan accordingly. My in-laws are in Shoreline so I can make it a dual purpose trip maybe :) I would love it to be a late morning trip, maybe 11am?

I am pretty flexable. Ya'll just tell me what time to be there and I will be there. I can't wait to go stock up on feed and see those of you that are going. I will be bringing Mr. Jazz (Great Dane) and the new puppy!
