Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Carolyn, I just wanted to say it is so generous of you to offer a free computer to whoever wants it! Thank you for your generosity.

Tonight we went to a potluck with all our friends (the Young Married group at church); we all have young kids and it was a lot of fun. We had a white elephant gift exchange that was super fun too and we brought home some great gifts! Jeanine was much better before we left to go there, yay! They also went right to bed because they had 3 hours to run themselves ragged all over the church with 28 other kids :p

I might have 2 takers for 2 pullets tomorrow, yay! That will bring us down to a more comfortable 10 girls, and I think I'll stay at that until I know for sure if I can get the coop retrofitted soon; I think I can easily re-orient the coop so that I have 2 long low roosts instead of 2 short hight roosts, remove the poop shelf entirely, and always keep a thin layer of shavings on the linoleum floor; sounds more manageable to me than scooping the shelf every day, so that's gonna be my plan I think.

To everyone who responded to my post thanks so much! Especially CarolynF! I've already learned a lot!

I don't have any information about how the eggs were stored....all I know is that we got a dozen and 3 of them were green and tasted like grass.

Anyone know of private chick suppliers in the Bellingham area? Monroe is a bit of way to go for me.

Thanks again everyone!

Quote: OMG... YES! Geeks rule! I'm not one but our son most certainly is one. We all hold him in the highest esteem. Love that you keep one backup off-site. Great idea! Well, maybe my hard drive will just keep up the periodic noise and keep going... ya never know until the poo hits the fan.

Btw.....anyone have any Eater Eggers? While I believe Barred Rocks will be best...if I end up growing the flock I may want to branch out.

Does anyone have any other breed they REALLY love? If so, please share and why.

Thanks!

The shell or the inside of the egg?

I've pretty much liked all the different breeds I've had. With the possible exception of an RIR. It was a little mean.
I've had
Buff Orps
Easter Eggers
Speckled Sussex
Barred Rock
White Rock
and a few others

Of Note:
I currently have a Buff Orp from Rainwolf that is by far the gentlest hen I've ever had, and the largest.
And an 1/2 banty EE from Rainwolf as well that is the friendliest thing.
Rainwolf raises the nicest birds.
I have a Sicillian Buttercup that is by far the most curious and smartest chicken I've had

to all of the new people.

I fell behind today and with my head feeling like it does, just can't catch up with the thread.

To the person asking how to lower cholesterol, quit eating grains and sugars. Mom used to have really high cholesterol (around 300 total) and around 480 for her triglycerides. Her doctor had her try several different meds to lower everything. Mom had been eating processed foods that were gluten free (actual wheat allergy). Last spring she decided she was just going to change her and dad's diet. She quit buying packaged foods. They eat salad, potatoes, milk, and meat now, all meals prepared from scratch. Mom makes potato soups regularly. Most nights it's a baked potato, salad, and piece of meat. In three months her cholesterol dropped to 180 and her triglycerides to 220 something. The doctor kept quizzing her on that next appointment, since meds can't even do that.

They eat like we did when I was growing up. We were skinny kids, didn't put on weight until we all left home and joined the military. Convenience foods are killer. One would think I'd have learned after I ended up with oral Thrush from vitamin B deficiency. Habits are so hard to change. Mr. Doesn'tThisPastryLookGood doesn't help me at all. He bring home all sorts of bad junk food and has to share it. It's sweet he always thinks of me and get me stuff but it doesn't help us eat healthy.

I think we all have Eater eggers. There are two of us in this house.

Sorry, I just couldn't resist!
My avatar is an EE (Easter Egger). There are lots of them around. If you've been watching all the hatching going on this weekend you've seen reference to OE (Olive Eggers) which is just another, more specific, Easter Egger. They lay an olive green egg instead of the blue/green. I know a good source in Granite Falls but there are others. Not everyone in Washington participates in this thread, so be sure to ask in other threads, too. I know Monroe isn't close, but if you want to get a good view of a LOT of breeds, and meet the people you find here, in person, the Monroe show will be a Must Do. It makes a great day trip or even a whole weekend. My hubby and I have gone to 2 shows and a swap and made them all into full day or long weekend outings. Loved It!

I have a Black Sex Link that is very much like a small Australorp, her personality is great and she's a very reliable layer. I've heard a lot of very good things about Austrolorps.

Just out of curiosity, why are Barred Rocks your top pick? If we understand your line of thinking we can give you better feedback.

That sounds VERY much like the Paleo diet my DD and another couple I know are trying to live by. My DD already eats quite well, but the other couple are the more typical over weight and out of shape middle age couple that eats all the wrong stuff and pays the price. The very basic concept is to eat what people 4000 years ago ate. Which absolutely excludes any processed foods! And a lot of other stuff, too. It's too limited for me, but they both swear by it. But Wow... Hinotori, that's absolutely fabulous for your Mom. I'm super impressed! Maybe in my weak moments it will help to remember that!

BTW, I'm going to be trying your potato soup very soon! Wish me luck! If it turns out anywhere near as good as yours I'll be super happy.

Well darn it. No coop raising this weekend. We are getting bogged down in details, and I am sooooooo sick and tired of painting! It's doing all the little nooks and crannies that's killing me. Lamont put in the poop tray today. He designed it to sit on supports on each end, and I can lift it off to take it out if I need to. I think he's going to add a triangle support in the middle as well. I hope he remembered the vinyl flooring; I forgot to look in it to see if he put it in. I'm done painting the storage cabinet, but need to add another coat to the nest boxes. The lower doors are painted, but not the upper doors. And I will need to paint the poop tray, the whole exterior, the window, and the roost and pop door when they are done. We did get the vinyl put on the coop floor, so hopefully it'll be done gassing out by the time the birds go in. Vinyl stinks!

I'm seriously worried that we will miss our deadline.
