Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I was just reading on a thread about low egg production. People wanting to know why ?? One person in Florida said they have Australorps that lay white eggs

I was given 25 (18 count) egg cartoons by a friend. I have lots and don't need them. anybody want them ????

I'll take them if no one else wants them. I'm just up 522 in Echo Lk.

As one of the Wyandottes walked by me today, I reached down to sneak a quick pet and she squatted for me. I was fairly surprised, and so was she. I didn't know when they'd be getting close to laying. I scooped her up to give her a hug because she and her sister are not affectionate. She didn't even mind! She watched me and honked a bit while I petted her. When I stopped and started to put her down, she purposefully (and slowly) nipped at one of my fingertips. She then waited patiently for me to lower her to the ground. Her name is Bunny, but somehow I started calling her and her sister "the Christmas geese" because they make little honking sounds a lot. I realized this around Christmas and so I started calling them that. They're the ones that go after the Pine Siskins. Such violent things. But so cute!

Oh. Well.

My daughter just mentioned that the person who will be doing her marriage ceremony next summer would like to be paid in chickens.

No pressure or anything...

My EE Janis. She is such a sweet thing. Cuddly and very interactive with you.

Gorgeous! I have a couple EEs just like that and they're super friendly too! One hates to be picked up but will let me pet her all I want, and the other follows my DH inquisitively all over the yard talking at him and nipping at his pants until she's picked up. She's super sweet!

How many chickens...?  That is certainly an interesting (requested) method of payment.

That hasn't been mentioned. I want to set another clutch as soon as Malvina shows the first sign of being ready, or botrrow an incubator next month, maybe, but I also want to have sufficient Hamburgs to make it sensible to sell eggs by the end of the next reproductive cycle.

And I need a new rooster for the EEs.

Did he ASK for chickens and NOT compensation, or was it just mentioned as a possible form of payment? I think that's great! Maybe he sees her (or your) chickens and wants some for himself?

Most of my gals have started up laying again this week as well - thank goodness, we were all growing tired of those flavorless grocery store eggs.

My Cochins and one of my EE's did not molt at the same time as all the rest - they are molting now that it is freezing cold and windy.

The polish hen we have been keeping here for DD's friend since it was 3 weeks old has gone broody. She was a mean and nasty hen, but a sweet broody. The other 3 chicks that came with her all turned out to be roosters and they are still here. I have SUCKER written all over me. Their owner has been telling me since May she is coming to pick them up. I even GAVE her a coop that I had paid someone $900 to build for me a year earlier, and her darn chickens are still here. Her 2 RIR mutt roos are agressive with the RIR and NH hens, but they are fine with people. (they terrorized poor Henny Penny so much that she moved herself into the banty coop). The EE/silkie/polish mix is hansome, friendly, and does not crow loud. I may keep him if she will take one of my Barnie roosters and some bantam cochin roosters along with her RIR boys. 10 roosters and 26 hens; not a good ratio. I want to get rid of half the roosters and pick up another 6 or so pulletts. Right now I am leaning towards BCM's because their eggs are BIG. My NH also has big eggs, but she is getting old and no longer lays many eggs, she seems to have pushed most of them out her first 2 years. She is almost 4 now. I am getting 5-8 eggs per day this week. Last week I got maybe 4 eggs per week (1 from the NH, and 3 from the now molting EE). he Barnies also have nice eggs, not quite as large, but they are very reliable layers.

Possibly even better than eggs - not so many hens are roosting in the nest boxes now that their fethers have returned! I hate cleaning poopy nest boxes.
