Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I'm going to gripe about hay for a little, here.

I was going to buy a half-ton of orchard grass when it first came in last summer, but there was a lot of other stuff going on- notably illness and equiptment break-downs- so I couldn't build a storage table (I'm seriously NOT SUPPOSED TO LEAN OVER) so I've been buying- or rther my sister has been buying for me- one bale at a time and it's getting obvious that about late july of last year people started cutting anything they could get a mower in to, and running it through the square baler regardless of damage to the equipment.

The bale before the one I've got nowwas the worst yet: sold as orchard grass, it had no strand nor seedhead identifiable as Dactylis glomerata; instead, it was almost all canary grass, with some random wheat and even bentgrass, as if they'd cut right over the drainage ditch and into the lawn. It had to go away: the sheep, after the first flake, refused to eat it at all. It was replaced by one that's "mixed native grass" and has a little moss and half a great big over-grown alfalfa plant, including a substantial amount of powder-fine shed alfalfa leaf. At least this one is easy to clean up for the chickes: put a flake in a big shopping bag and whack it on the ground once and shake it and all the little bits are there at the bottom for them to eat.

It would be amusing if I hadn't spent way too many summer mornings being dragged out of bed in front of a rainstorm to drive every truck and trailer anyone could get moving, to get every leaf of grass that was down and raked, baled and picked up and under some kind of cover before it got wet, and if there weren't several hundred six-foot round bales on the place, being fed to the cattle and ground for the pigs. Square bales are a suckers game, anymore, they don't pay for the fuel unless you've got brand-new high efficiency machinery and there's nobody to hire to buck bales, no matter how bad the economy gets.

That is what I did with mine. 6"x1/2" bolt and 8" lawn mower wheels with the steel hub. My tractor weighs a few hundred pounds as it is all 2x4 and Plywood framed. 4'x4'x10'

This is exactly what I have on mine too~ lawnmower wheels and 6" bolts, through the frame. I have 4 wheels on it so that I can just push it (in a straight line) if I need to rather than lifting it. It's too heavy for me to lift it by myself more than to pivot it, to turn ;)

Thank you! I'm not sure how much mine weighs but it's stinkin heavy! I just might get two more wheels to save the back, and my sanity.

*sigh* My broody is lame. She was off the nest for 3-4 hours today and I just checked on her again and she's back at sitting and acting like a broody. BAD broody! Glad I'm getting her chicks instead of egglets or she totally would have killed them today! Heck, she might not like the chicks either...at least I have other options to brood them if she's a lame mama too.

It is likely that the real cold air brought her hormone levels down a little when she got up to eat. She is not *lame*

(that is reserved for ducks). At least you have a back up plan, I had one too with my broody.

Quote: I think it's always a good idea to have a backup plan, it IS life, after all. I don't want to go through her killing chicks as well. Interesting about the cold air affecting her hormones. She was really weird today though. Came out of the nest box and nabbed a bite, drink, and then kept jumping up on the roost in the run to poop off of. Maybe it's hilarious for chickens to poop from a height. It was NOT humorous to me though...that crazy huge poop made a big plop and stunk it up bad.

Then after taking her mondo poop she went out of the run and ran around the yard with the rest of the flock for a few hours.

Yeah, broody poops stink BAD. The cold air helps lower hormones. This is how you break a broody, by putting her in a wire cage with food/water and no bedding, just the wire. Elevate it on some bricks or wood chunks so air flow goes on her underside. Their underside temp raises when they are broody to regulate temp on the eggs.

Just got this in an email:

re: The Egg and I, I don't recall any 'questionable' bits in the movie - I was very naive as a younger person and IF a movie had things like that they would just go right over my head. Considering how sanitized movies and later tv shows were - I think it's a safe bet. Maybe you could google it and see reviews.
There's an Egg an I road near Port Townsend that goes past the farm where the story took place. I was told by a local that the neighbors were not happy with having been portrayed as Ma and Pa Kettle hicks. They thought they should get some of the money the author got. Some are still angry.

I'm so excited! I ordered our new chicks for Lucy. Now she won't have to worry about keeping egglets warm enough in these freezing temps and we'll get chicks regardless; if she won't take them, I'll brood them in the outdoor hutch, in the chicken run. I already have the brooder lamp out there! :gig

Can I offer a stamp of approval and high recommendation for Eric Jonas at Seattle Farm Supply? He's a very friendly, very helpful man with great birds! His pullets are from Cackle Hatchery in Lebanon MO and they're always in great health, and they're pre-vaccinated so you don't have to worry about anything at all! I got 8 of my original chicks from him, and then 2 more (my 2 youngest Ameraucanas), and now I've ordered 5 chicks for Lucy. Instead of the typical waiting period so he can stabilize the chicks when they arrive to his house, he's allowing me to pick them up immediately so I can give them to Lucy. Anyway, he's always very helpful and has wonderful, healthy birds. I highly recommend his store!

I ordered 3 Barred Rocks, 1 Black Australorp, and 1 Ameraucana.

Congrats Jess!! That's so exciting, I can't wait to see baby pics!!

Good news everyone, my Cochin that wasn't looking so good yesterday is great today. Still a little on the sleepy side, but she's been running around with Klondike and the other Cochins, and not constantly hanging out under the heat lamp. I named her Hope. We are going to go pick up some save-a-chick today along with some chick grit.

That's great news, I hope she continues to improve!!
