Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I think talking with your neighbors and sharing eggs is the ticket.... we have 4 roosters currently and they can get pretty chatty at times. I've visited with all our neighbors and let them know we don't want our chickens disturbing them in anyway - encouraging them to talk with us first if there is a problem. We have also given away a fair amount of fresh eggs which is good incentive for a neighbor to put up with a some extra noise now and again. Most people are blown away by the difference in the quality of fresh eggs... and once introduced become chicken advocates quickly! Good luck... hope this helps.

This is a really good solution, which might not always work, but it's so much better to be pro-active. I have made many folks into pasture-raised egg enthusiasts by showing then the difference in our eggs and store eggs- try cracking the eggs on separate plates, dishes, etc- show them how the sore eggs are watery, the yolks are flat, etc. I explain how commercial growers add GMO corn and soy, and conditiions are so filthy the eggs are soaked in chlorine, etc. I demonstrated how clothing washes in chlorox still smelled of chlorox, meaning it had soaked in. Eggs are porous, therefore the chlorine soaks in and they are eating bleach. Giving away a dozen eggs was hard for us because we were not getting too much excess, and we eat A LOT of eggs, but it was awesome insurance to help our neighbors appreciate our efforts.

So I'm from Washinton, vnever knew about this website, it's great by the way...;) I'm learning way more by reading and asking questions on here then anywhere else. I've had chckens for just under a year, so I would say I'm still a newbie...

One place we messed up today. We didn't take many pics of those who showed up. So here is what we got for pics to my knowledge. !!!

Yes Yoda was in attendance and the only one who would pose.

OMG! You still have yoda. That's awesome!

Sorry this isn't quoted correctly - I had to copy and paste. The post was so long I couldn't get the quote to work...

You gave me chuckle - because I AM allergic to eggs. The list is long - very, very depressingly long.

From what I've heard, if you are giving Amprolium, do not use medicated feed. Hopefully the experts will chime in and explain this better.

Also - from what I understand, chicks can get ill if they have too much calcium, so if they are young chicks, you may want to remove the oyster shells. I know I didn't put oyster shells in until they started laying, and I switched to Layer feed at 18 weeks (which, I think, is supposed to have calcium in it - not sure though). Again - experts... explanations please! We've had great luck with good, thick shells, so I thing our girls are getting enough calcium. DH cooks all the eggs for the fam so I don't have to wistfully wish I could eat them, and he has commented how much thicker our egg's shells are than store bought.

Tacoma Farms, I only do one 5lb bag of medicated feed for my new hatched chicks. After that they go on Flock Raiser feed and if they are strong enough to survive then great, I don't allow weak birds in my flock. I have only lost one chick so far to health issues. Lost a couple to hawks, but have since prevented that from happening again(no unsupervised free ranging)

That's good to know. I switched Blackie and Latte from medicated feed to unmedicated chick start when I put them in the coop with the big girls. I was feeling guilty that they weren't on medicated for the full 18 weeks. Glad to know they didn't need to be on it that long.

The littles are still on it. Guess I'll just let that bag run out and call it good.

Hi Cmoore333,

Hello!
frow.gif
I am new to this site also, and live in the Maple Valley area. Where are you located? There was 2 meet-ups in 2 days- one in Centralia area, and today at IKEA in Renton/Tukwila. I'm looking forward to meeting another day, could not make this one!

I've got a "flock" of 6 right now- 5 hens and one rooster- and am planning to get another dozen since we now have acreage. I have a special needs teenage son that is selling excess eggs to save for trips he wants to take. He wants to be a world traveler, so this will require more than $4 a week in egg sales

IKEA was a great time! We had a huge group!! 10-11 BYCers and spouses, other family, and kids!! And of course Mr Chicken Rustler showed up to surprise and it was great to meet you! Wishing they had a better setup for tables, it was hard to talk to everyone, so anyone I didn't say more than a quick hello to, sorry! I hope we can all meet again soon and can't wait for the March 16 show!

I have already gone home to pickup DH and DD to head to the family fun center in Tukwila. Meeting DHs extended family for the afternoon.

Hawks are horrible. From september last year on I've had a hawk problem. In september I nearly had a heart attack. I was watching my chickens free range when hawk grabbed one. My dog grabbed the hawk before it could fly off with my chicken. My chicken was unharmed, the hawk flew to a nearby tree after my dog let go. My chickens still don't watch the sky for any danger, but my dogs have kept an eye on the sky after that. :)

GREAT dog!
