Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Keep in mind honey bees are not aggressive. They will sting if you trap them like in a shirt sleeve or if you get into their hive. but it is last defense.
Yes I now have to carry EPIPEN. FYI they are NOT cheap. They come in 2's $240 Also IF anybody carries one and IF you ever have to use you MUST call 911. This is not a law or anything but that is just the way it is. If you are bad enough to use EPIPEN then you need medics ad a trip to ER!!!

my insurance would cover all that. I just wish they'd let me get the epipen to keep with me in case i get stung. It's a long ride to the hospital when your throat is closing up, eyes swelled shut.....
I went through that once i don't want to experience that again. I fear all bees after that.

Quote: All honey is that way. See each cell of comb is filled with honey then when the moisture content gets between 17%-19% the bees cap it (for storage). to get it out there are basically 2 ways. Either destroy the comb and strain it out or cut the cap off and spin it in centrifuge. The latter is the preferred as it saves the bees having to rebuild next year.

Quote: As for insulation. The bees have normally removed it well away from the comb. Any that may be still on the comb is just cut off.
If you ever want to know if you have pure honey. put about a teaspoon of it in the bottom of a bowl. Carefully add cold water to cover it. Now just gently swirl the bowl. Pure honey will take the shape of honey comb, fake or diluted will not. Corn syrup is often used to cut honey.

Ok, I need a picture of what it's supposed to look like. I put some of the honey I got from my great grandfather in a bowl and tried it. All I got was a round lump at the bottom. It did not dissolve any in the water.

I have to make a formal apology to ChickAudie, for missing any and all responses to my questions & requests for help. I did not see the posts as I get lost in how fast this thread moves. I pray you will forgive my ignorance, & come back to BYC.

As for me, I am going to take a break since I can never keep up with all of the awesomeness that is shared on this thread & I want to hear what everyone has to share, but can't at this time.

See you all April 16th!

Checked on the happy family today and they're all doing fine. A few of the chicks were out from under mama eating in the 35 degree weather this morning when I went out there. So cute!

Question about mama raised chicks vs. brooder chicks: won't the mama raised chicks grow slower because they aren't coming out to eat near as much as the brooder chicks do in a super warm brooder?

Good morning everyone.

Tacoma, hope you return sooner, actually don't want to see you go. You are appreciated as all on here are.

I have no clue as to why ChickAudie made such a statement or why that poster decided to leave but I betcha life will go on.

Well now I have a new rooster. A black English Orpington which I have given the name of "Rascal". A very hansome rooster that I got from justrob97.
I need to post some pics of the progress of my coop and run but alas, my camera is not cooperating. Bad battery and need new memory card. Maybe a new camera is in my future!

Good question Jessica. I am not sure but don't think it will matter much as momma will make them come out and eat when she thinks they need to.

Mornin' you two! We had a rough start (kinda) because John had to leave with DH to get dropped off at my sister's house. You see, every monday we have a Latin/Art/Science/Community figures co-op at my church with a few close friends (including my sister) but DH needed the car today. I had to get John up at 7:10, get him dressed, breakfasted (haha apparently that's a word even though I was thinking I made it up!), and he had to fill out his name and his friends' names on their Valentine's cards...all in 20 minutes. Good thing he scarfs his breakfast every morning and writes pretty proficiently by now. So I'm down one kid until around 2pm! Should make my morning a breeze now.

Mikey - Congrats on the new rooster!!
CR - thanks for answering my question

My broody was on the opposite side of the rabbit hutch over near the food when I went out to check on them because she had pooped in one corner. I cleaned that out and hope she'll go back to that corner; the silly thing keeps huddling on the feeder over the chicks; that can't be comfortable!
