Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Busy day, and productive one. I finally got the wire dog kennel clad in greenhouse plastic so it wasn't too breezy and put Miss Deary outside for the day:

Rob dropped by with his lovely DD, met the outside animals ( I suppose the dogs will sulk for not being included in the party, but I'd cleared the yard of dog bombs and was not interested in another round before company came). He's going to help me with the stalled-out Hamburg Extension, and possibly with the Superfluous Rooster Problem.

Oh, and I finally managed to get to church again. Now let's see if we can make it two Sundays in a row!

Now if I could only find where I've hidden my feed bucket lid from myself...

So need to know what ya'll use in your pens to stop the digging!!! I have digger chickens, and im tired of filling in holes. Sand? Gravel? I'd love to hear pros and cons of both.

You do know they naturally dig for grubs and such. If you must curb the digging then lay down some hardware cloth under the shavings so they can't dig into the dirt.

Also: plastic hardware cloth is better than metal in soli-contact positions, is easier on your chicken's feet, ans less likely to kill grass (under chicken tractors which are moved regularly) which galvanised wire will do. It's also much less expensive and infinitely easier to cut.

The Elk Netting CR gets would also work really well, but not plastic temporary fence, which is really stretchy and easily abraded.

Fred Meyer's has a range of plastic buckets with matching lids from 1/2 gallon up to 5 gallon; there's also lidded buckets in the paint department at Home Depot.

I am so tickled. I just got 12 silkie/silkie sizzle chicks and 3 cream legbar chicks(2f-1m). The silkies are 2 weeks old and the legbar is 2 days. I have met some nice people down here in the Sacramento area that breed some nice birds. It is going to be fun with 3 cats and 15 chicks on a 14 hr drive home this week. I will post pics soon. Have to let them settle in. I am doing the happy chicken dance. Hubby even went with me today and tolerated all my fun.

OK here is the new rooster I brought home from Monroe.

Gorgeous! Who'd you get him from? He is very nice!
I didn't come home with any! I am proud of myself. Might not be so lucky next one though. Never know what your going to find at one of these shows!
