Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I've decided that I absolutely require some English Orpington pullets in a few years when I'll be down a few birds and looking for some fresh layers. I'd have given him the eye right back, but that's just me!

I am winning him over. He hesitantly agreed to let me get 4 or 5 chicks and I left with 15...... Then last night he said if I wanted more there was always when he came back down to do some work on this house. The door has been cracked. He is even talking about the coop he is going to build me.

Thanks for the spelling correction. They don't have chicken breeds in this spell checker. I think they should add those. Don't you?

Then there are those words that even spell checker goes Man, I haven't a clue. My spelling stinks. Scrabble anybody? For real, those birds where nice.

Think there is any profit to get chicks from that special breeder that had the rare breeds down here and bring them north to resell? She wasn't cheap. I paid $35 for 2 or the cream legbar chicks and $30 for the pullet alone at 2 days old.

Quote: Thanks for re-quoting this Carolyn! I love it so much!! I tried to earlier and my PC died, so I didn't want to do it all over....I know, I'm lazy :)

I have a question.........? o.0

My DFH is driving me crazy with unreasonable expenses we can't afford! From recent insurance hikes to fancy cable channels, and it's driving me

forget the wedding, I just want to stop dipping into savings for everyday bills...sheesh!

Anybody had this, uh...happen??

I feel so bad for everyone's losses lately. It's spring! We're supposed to be celebrating new chicks and little baby friends! All this sadness is making me worry about my dear Bonnie... She looked so uncomfortable the other day. Has anyone else had issues with birds and grass? I've been reading a lot about crop issues, and I think she's just gorging herself when she free ranges and it's causing the pendulous crop look. Not sure. Her crop empties overnight.... So confused.

On a positive note:
Flirty - I second, get two darn chickens!

I found a farm! Apprenticeship, on an awesome all encompassing goat creamery, begins a week from Saturday. Small steps to future dreams, right? The farm owner explained to me that I may get to midwife for the birth of a kid that day. HOW AWESOME WOULD THAT BE!? And I've already volunteered to set the incubator with spring chicks! Any suggestions for awesome laying breeds to introduce? I'm hooked on BA's.

Whoopee on the job! What a great education.

here's a newcomer question: My babies are close to moving to the outdoor coop from the warmth of the house, around 70 degrees.
Won't it be a shock to then go to 50 degrees and even lower at night? Do I put a light out there and will it be enough to lessen the shock of the temp change? Or do they just go out to the coop for the day and then come in again at night?

How many chicks are there you are moving, if more than 3 I think they will be fine. They will huddle together for warmth. I have two 4 mo Silkies together alone in my tractor coop. They keep warm enough together.

How old are they? Are they fully feathered?

I am such a softy. I like to give them a heat lamp at night when I introduce them outdoors because it makes me happy.

Bringing them in and out can be a royal PITA, depending on how many you have. I prefer just to wait. It's hard this time of year, waiting for the temps to finally get warmer. Even my adult flock, I am cold just thinking about them out there at night with no extra heat. Brrrrrrrrrrr!

There will be 12 moving to the coop, so I guess I am overreacting about my babies! Of course, they will huddle together.
Okay, that makes me feel better; thanks so much for your help.
