Anyone have any tips on how to keep chicks from spilling all their food... UGH it sees like such a waste...

Feed them wet food. My 8 chicks eat about a cup of medicated chick starter mixed with about a cup of water every day. They still have a little bit of dry food to peck at but they prefer the moist food. It's much less messy! Just mix it up in the morning and what thy dont eat throw away before you go to sleep.

OK thanks I will give that a try... I have 10 chicks and I filled up a chick feeder and within 10 mins it was gone... not eaten but all out of feeder but mixed in with the bedding...

OT........food
Me and Sis went to the Olive Garden yesterday and I had one of the specials. Roasted chicken with fettucini and a creamy garlic sauce that had yellow and orange bell peppers and spinach in the sauce.
Do any of you have a good recipe for a creamy garlic sauce?

(it was very, very good)
we are a non-dairy family (not by choice!) and love Karam's Garlic sauce. (google "lebanese garlic sauce recipe"- its very easy to make). I make a super fast dinner with it (or the homemade version, which takes 5 minutes to make and is far cheaper- make in a blender to emulsify it).

My 1 dish casserole made from Garlic Sauce - takes 5 minutes to make:
in greased 9x13 pan, (or whatever size your household is- adjust pan size to fit your needs:)
Add frozen vegetables- either frozen green beans, broccoli, broccoli/cauliflower mix, or mixed veg till pan is 2/3 full. (we love green beans best)
Add salt & pepper, then bite size chunks of raw boneless chicken breast, in a sparce layer on top. (I use about 3 medium size 1/2 breast portions per 9x13 pan)
Pour garlic sauce over everything
Put in 375 degree oven till browned on top and bubbling, about 45 minutes.
Serve over rice or noodles, or baked potato, or just eat plain.

I took TPT's tip to heart also- started feeding all my chicks wet food- that's a great tip- and the little guys come RUNNING when they see me fil up the wet food pan..

Here are a couple of updated pics. Just taken with my phone, as I cannot find the adaptor to get the pics off my camera to the puter. It takes one of the bigger cards and I do not have a slot on my laptop for it. Boo.

This is Flo Jo, the little brown Leghorn who thinks she is a Roadrunner. Her comb seems awfully large for a girl, but I have never had a Leghorn before. Maybe this is normal?

Here is Sirius Black, my lovely Silkie roo. Logan loves him. He does not feel the same about Logan. Poor kid.

This is my sweet little frizzle bantam, Hedwig. I was hoping she would be buff, but it's looking like she will be white. She was an impulse buy when I went to get my seed potatoes and I am hoping really a she.

Here is an updated pic of my little Golden Laced Polish. Spiky feathers all over the head, but they seem to be rounded rather than pointy, so I am thinking will be a hen.

And, here are Hermione and Buckbeak looking out the window.

Sorry there are so many. I am really loving my chickens this time around. And it is really helping teach Logan about the life cycle and responsibility. He loves feeding and watering them. I am going to start working on a nipple watering system this weekend. I can't wait!!

They are so cute, I am sitting her trying to convince myself to get off my ... and set up the light box and take pics of mine. I am expecting a bag from china this week with a bunch of those nipple water things. I am so looking forward to have it in the brooder. I swear those chicks go out of their way to dirty the water. Got my eggs today and am letting them rest. Let me know how your water project works. I am next.

I did also and offer both at the same time. No question as to what they prefer. Wet. It is too bad we haven't invented a wet food nipple system. Anyone up to this? CR?

lilfarmmomma - Sorry to be bearer of bad news, but your leghorn is definitely a male.
That's what I was afraid of.

I will let you know. I love everything I have read about it. I plan to use pvc and a 5 gallon bucket that can be filled from outside. We shall see.
