Kate... most quilters now use rotary cutters rather than cutting with scissors. It's much faster and far more accurate. And very few of us quilt by hand any more. Most people will use their home machine or either a medium- or long-arm quilter. And a whole lot of people send their quilt tops to professional quilters, mostly long-arm and a few hand quilters.
My next door neighbour quilts - she has this HUGE frame in her workroom where she puts the quilt. I'm not sure what it's called, but it's where she makes 'em.

Somehow it doesn't seem right to do it on a machine, like machine embroidery. I still have a silk blouse, hand embroidered, that my Mom had made in Hong Kong about 57 years ago. It's gorgeous.

New cream legbar chicks arrived today from Greenfire; 8 girls, 2 roos. They are all eating and drinking like crazy and appear very active. Very exciting! We will see how they develop and if I can figure out how to keep the best roo without driving the neighbors crazy.

Cl, are those your "cornballs" ?
yes !
This is the interesting part:

Usually we grow out cornballs either in the tractor, or in a coop.
In that, there is no lights on at night as the spring is usually more progressed at that time.
We grow out 2-3 "batches" of cornballs and the last batch grown out in late summer always gets so hot.
heat is so hard on them.
So
This year I started early, and this spring being so cool & wet, I have grown the cornballs out in the chick brooder (which has a door to go out in a chick proof pen) and a heat lamp.
This is the interesting part !
These cornballs have grown 2X as fast as usual...and we have decided it has to be the fact that the heat lamp illuminates the pen, and the cornballs eat & drink all night (in between naps) instead of sleeping all night as they did in the tractor or coop.
I am going to do in a few today that are especially big & will weight them.
I'll post weights later.
