I believe that CR recently acquired that pretty girl to start breeding (please correct me if I'm wrong). That sort of Brahma just highly resembles that variety of Wyandotte. I have two BLRWs. They are lighter in color; the butt fluff is completely blue. It looks as though there is black on the neck feathers of the Brahma, but the Wyandottes don't have black anywhere.

That would explain it looked like a BLRW to me. I didn't know that there are breeds that look so similar but are different breeds.

Yes, CR is breeding a project color in the Brahma's. Blue Laced Red

Wow, what a neat cake! And look at that happy 3 year old! I'd leave those mohawks for a week- they are adorable!

I will have to think what I can put inside a cake like that for my son. (gluten free, dairy free, soy free, corn free, food dye, preservative free kiddo.) Hummm...there's SunSweet brand organic jelly beans and gummy worms, and TJ's has dark chocolate honey-sweetened mint patties. I can already picture it!

My nine-year-old OEGB (Minnow) has decided that she's going to try to hatch today's eggs. She's such a goofy thing; goes broody every year. Pudge needed to lay a really late egg and had to squeeze in behind Minnow, who was pretty centered on the nest shelf. Pudge is polite to her elders, even if they're bantams. She's a good girl.

My children are melting. Literally, melting down, crying, sugar is wearing off and the long day is causing chaos. We had a great day until now My mini Pinata cakes didn't turn out as I'd hoped, but the birthday boy and everyone else still thought they were awesome so I won't complain. I'm a TERRIBLE baker so at least they tasted good! Pics in a minute, from the ipad.

One great thing about today was William's ophthalmology appointment. We wanted to get his next corrective eye surgery over with if he needed one (he had one at 8mo old) and it turns out his glasses have helped his turned eye so much that he won't need a surgery again for the foreseeable future! Woohoo!!!

Hey Jess- melting children can be soothed in a bathtub full of warm water infused with 2-4 cups epson salt. (The magnesium sulfate soaks in and detoxes nasty stuff- like sugar and food dye and alkali-processed cocoa). This, from 10 years of experience with a kid who reacts very strongly to that sort of stuff. If no epson salt, then 2-4 cups baking soda helps. I promise!

I have looked at a bunch of sites now including the one you referenced and it has helped me come to the conclusion that I want to stick with what the hatcheries call "Araucauna" chickens because that is what I have raised and enjoyed. If there is no standard for Easter Eggers at least I know I am getting something the hatcheries produce for the traits I want in chickens and not true Araucaunas with the feather tufts and deadly genetics. It has been 10 years since I raised chickens so I had no idea that the chickens I thought I had were not what I wanted after all!

At least I used a Gluten Free cake mix. Not thrilled with Betty Crocker as I know they use a TON of GMO stuff, but I'm thankful I didn't have to put in a ton of work to make the cakes today. I need to get myself a really good gluten free baking cookbook, for stuff people actually make all the time like birthday cakes and cookies and muffins and stuff. I'm sick of mixes. The frosting was loaded with food coloring and I know I shouldn't have stuffed the kids with that junk but when a little boy asks for red frosting...well, you know the drill.

Flighty meaning they fly a lot or are jumpy? I thought about EEs I guess it would be a good lesson for my son that eggs come in all colors. I'll look into them. Is there a specific cross with an ameracauana I should look for??

I am amazed at how many people don't know that eggs come in more than just brown or white.

Sunnysidemicrofarm has awesome RIR's. They're a small farm/Breeder in Ohio they have amazing birds the owners super nice and very helpful. They're not local but have very cool birds and a nice varity of breeds. Check them out even if it's just for something to do for fun sunnysidemicrofarm.com.

Oh I know there's some out there. Just not many. Most places are just the production hatchery stuff. Not the real thing which is sad. I've heard of that farm before, and as far as RIR's go there are some awesome ones on this forum (The Heritage RIR thread is one of my favorite to read for fun). I'm just one of those chicken folk that is sad the old breeds are falling by the wayside.

Tell me about it. I'm beginning to understand that getting three non-hatchery SSH hens and an unrelated rooster in 2011 was nearly a miracle, and I should have been more aggressive about hatching eggs last year- although given that 2012 was the Year Electrical Things Died, I'd have been hard-put to house them.
