Quote: Chicks with beards aren't Araucanas. The stores often get it wrong because the hatcheries they get them from are wrong too.

If you check out this link to the Araucana Breeders Club, you can see in the guidelines beards are a DQ. (bottom of page)

Yolks on eggs are dependent on the feed they are given. All chickens can produce dark yolked eggs. And they aren't lower in cholesterol!

Glad you have come here to get some better information than from feed-stores.

My opinion on Broodness --

In general most hatchery birds will not be inclined to go broody. I think that hatcheries dont want their hens to go broody, so they selectively breed that out of them.

If you *want* a broody - then certainly avoid hatchery mixes. Like CR said those EEs and SLs are not very likely to go broody. I have four broody hens right now, none of which are hatchery birds. I have had hatchery Orpingtons and RIRs go broody - but not PBRs or EEs.

I *think* I have a broody BSL - if so, it is not a hatchery bird, it is one of my hatches from last year. If she's on the nesting box today, then she will be put in solitary confinement for two days.

Oh, gotta tell you all, something really odd happened last week. We were catching chickens to sell, and for some bizarre reason, four of them flew right into the middle of the pond! Then they swam frantically to the other bank and ran off. I've never seen swimming chickens before, they were pretty good at it too.

Hi we are actually in the same boat. We were told by a neighbor that we could have chickens in Yelm, but we had to have the coop a specific distance from the fences and even quoted us the ordnance. We inquired Thursday at city hall, about having chickens and the man said he believed it wasn't allowed but would check. Yesterday (friday 4/12/2013) we came home around 5:30 pm to a notice saying that we were in violation of having chickens in Yelm city limits, when ONE, we have no coop in our back yard, no chickens running around, absolutely NO evidence of owning chickens. But some how we are in violation??? Could you please be more specific with the ordnance saying we CAN have them, I clicked the link you sent but we couldn't find were it said we can have them. I would really LOVE to own chickens. I think it would be a great thing for our family. Thank you.

Hi and Welcome! May I ask who you were talking to, if you remember? I don't know if anyone will answer without a quoted post. Anyone here in Yelm that has a copy of the ordinance?
