Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Word of caution here -- This guy (He's in Orting right?) is a chicken trader, and does not always do a good job of quarantine. When I was new, I purchased birds from him, and they were nasty sick. There is no way he did not know his entire flock had CRD, but he still sold his birds to me. I learned a lot of very valuable lessons, and ended up having to replace my entire flock.

By chicken trader I mean that he puts adds on different CL's looking to purchase birds, he takes them back to his place and sells them for more. He also gets lots of birds from hatcheries. Not that hatchery birds are bad, but he may not be completly forthwright about the origin of the birds he is selling.

I've seen his coops, they are not bad. But consider - if you can do the labor, you can always build it for cheaper than you can pay someone else to build it for you. I did some small coops for some folks last year. They would hold 4 LF birds - 16 sq ft of 'coop' and 32 sq ft of 'run' with a roof to cover it all. Materials (not counting wire) were about 220 bucks. I think the folks went in on the wire and that was maybe another 30 each? (You'd have to ask SadieSue, FlyRobinFly (HEY where is she?) or FWJ about the wire, it was waiting for me at my first stop).

If you have the time (patience in my case) to wait to get chickens until you have collected the coop materials and built it - you can really do a coop for cheap. Old fence. boards, a free shed who knows -

You will not need much in the way of insulation for your coop, birds tolerate the cold a lot better than most folks think. A roof top garden bed would be nifty tho :)
This is exactly why I highly recommend new peeps ask others before they buy. While we may not know everybody who is selling we may be able to save ya from having to go deal with what VF had to. Sadly there are people out there who will knowingly sell sick birds. Even worse there are a couple of them RIGHT HERE on BYC. I will say anybody who wants can feel free to PM me and I will tell whatever I know about a person selling I also welcome anybody to ask others about me. I will not knowingly sell anything that is not good. I may give it away but the person will be made aware of the issues first.

what were they saying about cream legbars on that program?

Sorry, I was quoteing StumpFarmer, you will need to ask her about this:idunno

hallerlake brought up Cream Legbars; I was talking about my build-your-own-heavy-laying silver-spangled blue-eggers project.

For the newer members: hallerlake and I have been friends for... wow, how long, lots more than ten years, anyway, and sometimes address each other in shorthand.

Also, on another posting board I frequent I am known as Confusa...

(And on another, Cronescaper).

Quote: uh-huh. I just wanted 3. Within 4 months I had 8. I should have started with 8 to begin with! How many are you allowed to have where you live?
Me ??? Well I don't know that there is a limit here other than how many coops I wanna build. Right now I have 3 and

will be adding 4 more soon. I think my limit is the boundries of 13 acres.

Seems like I am right in the middle of the 2 biggest quackers on this site, with one in Redmond and the other in Bonney lake.

I am pretty sure this is why I am feeling so daffy lately! I am truly ascaredt I am about to grow webbed feet here..... duck math might be the next curse that happens to me.

I'm going to bed, hoping I don't have a dream about ducks again. I KNEW I should not have picked up that green turtle kiddie pool at the yard sale....
Green turtle? Yard sale?

My ducks love those, except my back prefers the walmart kiddie pools.

I can legally have 999 chickens on my 3 acres. Of course I will never have that many. But maybe up to 100 someday(sooner than later at my current growth rate). Getting 3 Silkies from KMHunter next week and maybe 2-4 BCM/OE's from Heather at the swap. But will loose 5 when I process the meat group in 4-6 weeks

Well today we had to go to town and I decided to drive the pick up. On the drive the pick up relayed to me that is DOES NOT want to go to Vancouver or Canby the following week. Soooo it looks like we will be taking Whitey. The bigger truck. Scary thing is......... too much space to haul lots of stuff home.

Not caught up, did not have it in me tonight to read through everything. We got up at 5 and left the house at 6 to head to Ashford to pick up DS's little pony. We were trying to get him home and in the stall before DS woke up. We missed, but it was a fun attempt. They had snow down there and it was coming down steadily as we got the trailer loaded with the pony and his tack. We got back just before 9 and got him settled before he came down to the barn. Logan brushed him about 5 times today and can clean his front hooves all by himself. This is the best pony I have ever met.
Here is the hoof cleaning, his feet should be turned away from the horse, but I didn't correct him, as he was so excited that he could do it. We will work on that tomorrow.

Also, in looking over the youngest chicks today, I am 85% sure that one of my white leghorns is also a cockeral. I do NOT need two Leghorn roosters. So,
DH said that he would butcher it.

FWJ ~ the cakes that you made looked wonderful!! Your little guy is cute with his mohawk! I let my boys do the Faux-hawk, but my older son doesn't ever style his hair, so it just looks like a regular haircut. He is not allowed to have a mohawk at school, it is on the disruptive list in the dress code.
