Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hello all, new to this forum - and new to raising chickens. I've got six 2-1/2 month olds. All different breeds. Anyone else in the Maple Valley area? I've got an almost 2 yr old daughter that I'm always looking for playmates for!

Welcome!! I will have a flock of 5 and all different breeds as well. Yours look as varied as mine will. Enjoy!

Whew! I just got caught up and it's already 9:45. I am pooped!

Loved all the pics!

And getting caught up with everyone else's day, but I am tired now and am going to bed.
I am getting 10 black silkie chicks shipped out to me tomorrow. I am nervous!
I should get them Thursday, or Friday. Hopefully Thursday.

Hopefully you all don't talk as much so I can catch up easier tomorrow.
I know.....wishful thinking!

Good night all!
Awww!!! I have a Silkie roo. He is the sweetest thing! As soon as I can get a separate coop built, I am going to look for a couple girls for him. He is "black", but the breeder that he came from breeds for blue. And to me, he does not look truly black. He really watches over the smaller chicks and lets them snuggle up to him at night. It's really funny.

I saw that on the news. People are nuts! I can think of SO many things I could do with that money. Actually, I could fix my barn, get some cattle, get a better truck and probably re-fence most of my property. All at once, rather than piece by piece. Oh well, it doesn't hurt to dream.
I didn't think about that, I will check tomorrow. Isn't he just the cutest? I was kind of disappointed that he seems to be white. I was hoping for a buff, as when I got him he was the same color that my buff Cochin was when I got her. Oh well, I guess
he will have to get used to baths once in a while.

Speaking of baths, I have a bunch of chicks that get really dirty undersides. How young can you safely bath a chick? I would be afraid of chilling them. My Silkies are going on 7 weeks old. Those feathered feet get so dirty!

The cows are definitely concerned that I get sufficient exersize: We had to make a run to Freddie's after my husband came home from work (he's having a week of early meetings, so can come home by 7pm, a nice change) and when we came home the cows were having a FIT out in the orchard. I was concerned about the Perpetually Pregnant red cow, but also an hour past my (insulin dependant diabetic) dinner time, so I ate quickly and then went out to see what the problem was.

There are several gates into the orchard field, two of them between the orchard and the pastures. They were both opened last Wednesday when we worked cattle, but the one in the SW corner blew shut Sunday, and since there's a foot of mud under it I left it that way. This afternoon, after I spent more time and energy than I had stomping all over the distinctly un-flat topography, after I'd worked myself to a standstill, I looked up and... Hey! Cows in the orchard! (one of the gates goes from my yard into the orchard) All of them, all ten calves... later, the cows woke up and wandered off to eat hay, but the calves, being babies with tummies full of green-grass milk, slept on. When the moms decided they needed to lose some milk, they started calling their calves, and were not smart enough to walk around to the open gate (a grand total of what, maybe 120 feet?) but just kept calling their sleeping, not hungry calves louder and louder and louder...

So I got to go out in the dark and wade in the mud to get the gate open, and STILL had to chase some of the cows through so they'd get the idea.

Good thing I don't want to stay up tonight.

Whew. Just caught up with all the posts since I last got online.

I got the roof done on my pen this weekend. Check out the bikerchicky family link to see pictures.

Next is the house for them, and figuring out how to attach a roost in the pen with the plywood sides preventing access to the chain links for support. I also plan to put a roost in the house along with the next boxes for the chilly nights they want to stay warmer.

Let me know your thoughts on the pen, please.
